What is work?
Work can be defined as transfer of energy. In physics we say that work is done on an object when you
transfer energy to that object. If one object transfers (gives) energy to a second object, then the first
object does work on the second object.

Work is the application of a force over a distance. Lifting a weight from the ground and putting it on a
shelf is a good example of work. The force is equal to the weight of the object, and the distance is equal to
the height of the shelf.

Formula of Work
The work done by a force is defined to be the product of component of the force in the direction of the
displacement and the magnitude of this displacement. W = F.d

To express this concept mathematically, the work W is equal to the force f times the distance d, or W = fd.
If the force is being exerted at an angle θ to the displacement, the work done is W = fd cos θ.

Question Answer
W = Fd cos θ
A box is pulled by a string in a
= (15 N)(10 m) cos 30°
direction of 30 degrees and requires
= 150 . 0,866
a force of 15 Newtons. determine
= 129,9 J atau 130 J
the work required to pull the box if
the box moves 10 meters!
So, the work required to pull the
box is 130 Joules.
What is energy?
Energy can defined as the capacity for doing work. The simplest
case of mechanical work is when an object is standing still and
we force it to move. The energy of a moving object is called
kinetic energy. Whereas potential Energy is the energy stored in
an object and is measured by the amount of work done.

Types of Energy
There are two types of energy in many forms :
● Kinetic energy = Energy of motion
● Potential energy = Stored energy

Energy
An object of mass 1 kg is thrown
vertically upwards with an initial
velocity of 20 m/s. If the
acceleration due to gravity is g = 10
m/s2, then the height of the object
when its potential energy is equal to
three quarters of its maximum
kinetic energy is... ?
Answer
m = 1kg
v1 = 20m/s The height of the object when Pe = ¾. Ke max?
g = 10m/s2
Pe = ¾. Ke max

The object moves upward (vertical), then the maximum kinetic energy
of the object is the initial velocity of the object that is thrown.
Ke  max = Ke initial Pe = ¾. Ke max
Ke max = ½ m. mgh = ¾. 200
Ke max = ½.1. 1.10.h = ¾. 200
Ke max = 200 J 10h = 150 m  h = 15 m

The height of the object when the object's potential energy is equal
to three-quarters of the maximum kinetic energy is 15 meters.

Principle
The change in the kinetic energy of an
object is equal to the net work done on the
object.
What is
power?
Power is a physical concept with several different meanings, depending on the
context and the available information. We can define power as the rate of doing
work, and it is the amount of energy consumed per unit of time.

Unit of power?
The SI unit of power is Joules per Second (J/s), which is termed
as Watt. The unit Watt is dedicated in honour of Sir James
Watt, the developer of the steam engine
Formula of Power

P= P = = = F = F.v

1 watt = P = F.v
1 kw = 1000 watt

1 mw = 1x watt
1 hp = 746 watt

kw = kilowatt w = work (J) v = velocity (m/s)

mw = megawatt t = time (s) d = displacement (m)
hp = horsepower P = power (watt) F = force (N)
Example of
Power
F = m.g
= 1000 x 9.81 = 9810 N

W = F.d
= 9810N x 2m

= 19620 Nm = 19620 J

P = = 1308 J/s
= 1308 watt.
The power is 1308 watt.
