Example No.3
The readings from Sling Psychrometre are as follows:
• DBT =30 deg C
• WBT =20 deg C
• Barometer reading =740 mm of Hg

Using steam stable, Determine:

1. DPT
2. RH
3. Specific Humidity
4. Degree of saturation
5. Vapour Density
6. Enthalpy of mixture per kg of dry air
Solution
• Given :
• DBT =30 deg C
• WBT =20 deg C
• Barometer reading =740 mm of Hg
We know 1 mm of Hg =133.3 N/m2
so 740 x 133.3 = 98,642 N/m2
= 0.98642 bar (since 1 bar = 105 N/m2)
1. Dew Point Temperature :
To get DPT, we need to find out the partial
pressure of water vapour Pv using Carrier’s
equation

For using Carrier’s equation , we need Pvs,Pt.
Pvs WBT= Saturation Pressure corresponding to
WBT (from Steam table) at 20 deg C
Pvs = 0.02339 bar
Pt= Total pressure (barometric pressure)
= 0.98642 bar

so using Carrier’s equation

Pv = Pvs WBT – [(Pt-PvsWBT)(DBT-WBT) /( 1544- 1.44WBT) ]

Pv = 0.02339 – (0.98642-0.02339)(30-20) /( 1544- 1.44 x 20)]

so using Carrier’s equation

Pv = Pvs WBT – [(Pt-PvsWBT)(DBT-WBT) /( 1544- 1.44WBT) ]

Pv = 0.02339 – (0.98642-0.02339)(30-20) /( 1544- 1.44 x 20)]

Pv =0.01701 bar
• Since the DPt is the saturation temperature
corresponding to partial pressure of water
vapour Pv ,
• so from steam table , we find that
corresponding to a 0.01701 bar ,
• the PDT is 15 Deg C
2. Relative Humidity :
• From steam table, we find that the saturation
pressure of water vapor corresponding to DBT
• 30 Deg C is 0.04242 bar (Pvs )
• so RH = Pv/Pvs
2. Relative Humidity :
• From steam table, we find that the saturation
pressure of water vapor corresponding to DBT
• 30 Deg C is 0.04242 bar (Pvs )
so
RH = Pv/Pvs
= 0.01701 / 0.04242
= 0.40 = 40 %
3.Specific Humidity :
w = 0.622Pv / (Pt- Pvs)
3.Specific Humidity :
w = 0.622Pv / (Pt- Pvs)
= 0.622 x 0.01701 / ( 0.98642 – 0.04242)
= 0.011247 Kg /kg of dry air
= 11. 247 gm / kg of dry air
4.Degree of saturation µ = w/ws
• Specific humidity of saturated air =
Ws = 0.622 Pvs / (Pt- Pvs)
4.Degree of saturation µ
• Specific humidity of saturated air = ws
= 0.622 Pvs / (Pt- Pvs)
= 0.622 0.04242 / ( 0.98642 – 0.04242)
= 0.027945 Kg /kg of dry air
= 27.9 gm / kg of dry air
4.Degree of saturation
• Specific humidity of saturated air = ws
= 0.622 Pvs / (Pt- Pvs)
= 0.622 0.04242 / ( 0.98642 – 0.04242)
= 0.027945 Kg /kg of dry air
= 27.9 gm / kg of dry air

• so Degree of saturation
= w /ws
= 0.011247 /0.027945
= 0.391 or 39.1 %
5. Enthalpy of mixture per kg if dry air
h = 1.005DBT + w(2500-1.88DBT) (empirical
relation)
= 1.005 x 30 + 0.011247 x (2500-1.88 x30)
= 57.63 kJ/Kg of dry air
Enthalpy of Moist air (from steam table) :

1.Enthalpy of mixture = Enthalpy of dry air +

enthalpy of vapour associated with dry air

= 1.022 DBT + w (hfgDPT +2.3 DPT) kJ/kg

Where hfgDPT = Latent heat of vaporization of water corresponding to DPT
(from steam table)
Enthalpy of Moist air (from steam table) :

1.Enthalpy of mixture = Enthalpy of dry air +

enthalpy of vapour associated with dry air

= 1.022 DBT + w (hfgDPT +2.3 DPT) kJ/kg

Where hfgDPT = Latent heat of vaporization of water corresponding to DPT
(from steam table) = 15deg C

• hfgDPT = 2465.4 kJ/Kg

• h =58.77 KJ/kg
