Quadratic Functions

Quadratic Function

Is a function that can be written in the form

f(x) = ax² + bx + c, f(x) read as “f of x” is also
equal to y, where a, b and c are real numbers and
a  0.
The variable's highest exponent is 2, hence it's
referred to as a second degree function.
The graph of a quadratic equation is a parabola,
which is a smooth curve.
Real Life Applications of Quadratic Equations
 It is very useful in calculating
areas.
 Quadratic Equations can be also
useful in figuring a profit.
 Quadratic equations are
extremely beneficial in athletic
events that involve throwing
objects such as the shot put,
balls, or javelin.

 Speeds can also be calculated

using quadratic equations.
Solving Real Life Problems
Using Quadratic Equations
Mr. Viserion asked the carpenter to make him a
rectangular bulletin for his room. Suppose the area of a
rectangle is 115.5 m² and the length is 15 meters longer
than the width. Find the length and width of the
rectangle.
A=lw
115.5 = (w+15)(w)
width 115.5 = w² + 15w
0 = w² + 15w – 115.5

Length = w + 15
w² + 15w – 115.5 = 0
a = 1; b = 15; c = -115.5
x=

Find the length and width of the rectangle.

x  = Length =W+5
= 5.605 +15
= 20.605

x  =

x  =
5.605
x  =
x = 5.605 = Width 20.605
