Thomas Burberry, a 21-year-old draper’s


apprentice, opened a small outfitter’s shop in
Basingstoke, Hampshire, England.

Customer became loyal to brand because of


their commitment to quality and innovation in
fabrics & outwear designs. By 1870, the shop
had grown to an ‘emporium’.

Gabardine – the breathable, weatherproof and


tear proof fabric developed by Burberry – was
introduced in 1880.

Now trading as Thomas Burberry & Sons, the


business opened a shop in the West End of
London at 30 Haymarket.

Burberry developed the Tielocken, the


predecessor of the trench coat, which was
adopted by British officers during the Boer
War.

The Equestrian Knight trademark appeared for


the first time accompanied by the Latin word
‘Prorsum’, meaning forwards.

Commissioned by the War Office to adapt its earlier


officer’s coat for new combat requirements, Burberry
added epaulettes and ‘D’ rings, and the ‘trench coat’
was born.

In 2006 came the Brit Check, introduced to


complement their then new fragrance,
Burberry Brit For Men.

5. The Mega Check:

Moving along, we’ve got the Mega Check,


launched in 2008. Remember model
Agyness Deyn and her cashmere scarf in
the ad campaign? Young, edgy and
modern, it also coincided with the launch
of their women’s fragrance, Burberry The
Beat.

6.The Beat Check:

And last but not least, the Beat Check


which made its debut only this year.
Created as the male counterpart of the
Mega Check, it has the same vibe as the
latter, just well, more manly.
