There are two meanings of verb phrases or phrasal verbs,
the first according to traditional grammar and the second
according to generative grammar. In traditional grammar,
what is meant by a verb phrase is a group of main verbs
(main verbs) and auxiliary verbs (auxiliary verbs), or in the
form of linking verbs.
Meanwhile, in the
discussion of generative TA-
UNDERS
grammar, a verb phrase is OF
NDING
a predicate in a sentence, VERB
which includes the main PHRASE
verb, auxiliary verb, and
complements and/or

VERB
modifiers if any, but does
not include the subject of
the sentence.
Verb phrases are divided into two forms, based on
traditional grammar and generative grammar. If you
refer to traditional grammar, it means that the text or
sentence is structured based on the basic sentence
pattern, which consists of a verb and a subject.
The generative grammar is a sentence transformation,
where a sentence consists of various elements, ranging
from subject, verb, modal, noun or pronoun. And each
form of the verb phrase certainly has a different formula.
• Traditional Grammar +/- auxiliary verb + main verb
• Generative Grammar +/- auxiliary verb + main verb +/-
complement +/- modifier
M
Traditional Grammar

Based on traditional grammar, a phrase

verb consists of a group of words
(phrases) in the form of a main verb
(main verb) and an auxiliary verb
(auxiliary verb).

English verb phrases, example:

I was sleeping while my father was
watching TV. (I was sleeping when my
father was watching TV).
Generative Grammar

Based on generative grammar, verb

phrases are composed of main verb
(main verb), auxiliary verb (helping
verb), modifier (can be adverb,
adjective, or others), and complement
(object of the sentence).

For example:
I was talking to him ten minutes ago. (I
was talking to him ten minutes ago).
The arrangement of
verb phrases consists
of six kinds as follows:
1. Consists of main verb only
VERB
I am happy
She was here
Adam sings a song
• The verb can be in the present
tense (am, sing) or in the past
tense (was, went).

2. Consists of auxiliary verb “be”

followed by main verb in –ing
form
Be verb-ing
I am sleeping
She was reading a novel
3. Consists of auxiliary verb “have”
followed by main verb in past tense (past
participle)
have verb 3
They have gone home
She has had lunch
I had lost my key

*"have" here is not a verb which means "to

have". However, it is an auxiliary verb that
shows past tenses.

4. Consists of auxiliary verb “have” +

“been” followed by main verb in –ing
form
have been verb –ing
They have been waiting
She has been working hard
I had been sick all day
5. Consists of modal auxiliary verb (can,
could, may, might, must, shall, should,
will, would) followed by main verb
modal verb 1
You must go now
She can dance
They should study

6. Consists of modal auxiliary verb and

auxiliary “be”, “have”, or “have been”
followed by verb
modal auxiliary verb
You will be listening
She should have waited

*In one sentence, there can be two auxiliary

verbs “will + be”, “should + have”.
However, in one sentence it is only possible
to use one modal auxiliary verb.

be followed by the past participle or the third form of the verb.
 All forms of “be” followed by a present participle ending in –ing or
verb –ing, show the progressive tense.
 Any form of "be" followed by the past participle indicates the
