Building Services

(An Architect’s Perspective)

Ar. Smita Rashmi, Ar. Kuldeep Mishra, Ar. Shyamal Mishra
Lecture -1
Building services
• Building services are the systems installed in buildings to make them
comfortable, functional, efficient and safe.

• Structure + Services = Building

Types
1. Conventional Services –
- Mechanical Services
(Fire Services, Transportation e.g. lifts, escalators)
- Electrical Services
- Plumbing Services
2. Advance Services
- Building Automation (Building Management Systems)
- Security Services
- Gas Pipe Line
What is the role of an architect in building
services ?
“Everything which appears on the surface comes in domain of architect & everything which is
hidden behind the surface comes in the domain of consultant.”
• Any service installed in building demands some space – architect provides that space.
• Any service installed in building needs to be located according to its function – architect design
the building so he can allocate the space and location to service without disturbing the core
functions of building.
• Building services are bound to follow various building bylaws, codes and standards – it is the duty
of architect to fulfil those compliances (at least related to space & location constraints)
Building services are integral part of building
design
• If all required building services are taken into account from the conception stage of building
design final outcome will be good otherwise after thoughts will appear and not only aesthetics
will be compromised but also efficiency of building services will be reduced.

ELECTRICAL SERVICES
What we need to know?
• What will be the electrical load of building?
• Where is the connection point?
• Where will be the location of meter room?
• Where will be the location of substation/transformer & generator?
• What will be the root of HT cable from meter room to transformer?
• What are the installation criteria's for HT cable installation?
• What will be the capacity of transformers and electrical generators?
• What is the installation criteria's for HT cable installation?
• Where will be LT panel room & what area it would need?
• What will be the height of LT panel room?
• How many no. of electrical panel will be needed?
• What is the procedure of installation of panels in LT panel room?
• What root LT cable would follow from main LT panel room to individual block/tower etc.?
What we need to know?
• What will be the location of electrical shaft?
• How electrical bus duct will be installed?
• What will be the location of electrical panel/ meter room on individual floor?
• What will be the size, location & height of electrical cable trey?
• What will be the location of D.B. of individual unit?
• How many MCBs will be required for each unit? What will be the capacities of MCBs?
• How many no. of appliances are allowed in one circuit?
Electrical Rooms Dimension

• In the initial design steps, Electrical rooms estimated dimensions are

requested. Here, we will know how to estimate the dimensions of the
following electrical rooms:
•
• Electrical Panel Board Room,
• Transformer Room,
• Generator Room .
