INTERESTS

Rationale
• E-books as being the hardware/software combination specifically designed
for reading, in contrast with e-texts written in hyper-text markup language
and viewable on a computer (Morgan 1999).

• Printed book contains number of pages bound together with its front cover
and back cover page and refers to the physical book. In portability point of
view these books are not so good as compared to e-book. E-books are
offered, stored, distributed and read in physical form. So there is no
requirement of electronic device like computer, smart phones, laptops etc
to read these books. (Jena, 2020).

ELJENE Z. ABENASA
Theoretical Background
• This study is anchored on the diffusion of innovations
by Reynard (2017) and is supported by Pinnegar and
Carter (1990) theories of textbook and practice.

The Problem
Statement of the Problem
This study aimed to compare e-book and book in
student’s academic interest among senior high school
students of University of Cebu-Banilad Campus, S.Y.
2020-2021. The results of the study will be the bases for
recommendation.

ELJENE Z. ABENASA
Sub-problems
This specifically answer the following questions:
1. What is the level of comparison of academic interest of the respondents
a. academic e-book; and
b. academic book

2. Is there a significant difference between e-book and book in academic

interest of the respondents?

3. Based on the findings, what recommendation may be proposed?

ELJENE Z. ABENASA
Scope and Delimitation of the study
The delimitations of this study are that academic e-book is a
book that can be read on a computer or handheld device
designed specifically for this purpose. Textbooks must have
good quality pages and the content should be easy on the eyes.
Good quality binding also ensures that the book lasts for a long
period of time.

MARK GARCISO
Scope and Delimitation of the study
The limitations of this study or analysis are the difficulty in
getting respondents in this new normal set up. The condition
faced by the researchers are: lack of sources such as
computers, laptops and wifi to collect information. The
researchers in this case must have teamwork, cooperation, time
management, and good communication.

Literature Review
• Effects of Academic e-Book on the Academic Interest of
Students
• These literature are closely related to the current study for it
directly mentions the effect of e-book on the student
academic interest that could help students know the effects
of e-book usage for their study. From the past researches
above, student engagement at e-book is a strong predictor on
the academic interest of the students. It emphasized the
significance of a students’ academic interest towards e-book.

Research Methodology
• Research Design
• This study utilized comparative method using academic e-book and
book: a comparative study in student’s academic interests.
• Research Environment
• This research was conducted at University of Cebu – Banilad.
• Research Respondents
• The respondents were 92 from University of Cebu – Banilad
Campus.

Research Methodology
• Research Instrument
• This study used a 4 - page Experience using e-book
questionnaire and Experience using print books adopted from
a standardized questionnaire (Borchert, 2009).

Statistical Treatment of Data
To statistically analyzes and interpret the data requirements of the study, the
researchers used the t-test formula to compute the percentage in each scale, and this
allows them to get the frequency of each answer.

The researchers chose this statistical tool due to the use of comparative analysis.
The researchers were advised by their statistical to use t-test.
Formula:
t= mA−mB
√S2nA+S2nB
Where:

A and B represent the two groups to compare.

mA and mB represent the means of groups A and B, respectively. JASON B. OSORNO
Na and Nb represent the sizes of group A and B, respectively
Ethical Considerations
• Patton (2002) stated that researchers also need to anticipate the
possibility of harmful, intimate information being disclosed. The
researchers will be the ones to witness respondent's answer. As the
researchers conduct the said research, the researchers ensure that no
harm will happen to the respondents.

JASON B. OSORNO
Trustworthiness of Research
• The researchers use triangulation method with the aid of
standardized questionnaires to assess the reality of the
findings of the study from chosen respondents and not on
researchers’ opinions to establish credibility, reliability and
conformability of the research. According to Patton (1999),
Triangulation refers to the use of multiple methods or data
sources in qualitative research to develop a comprehensive
understanding of phenomena.

Summary
This comparative study determined the significant difference between academic e-
book and book of the senior high school students of the University of Cebu –
Banilad for the academic year 2020 – 2021. The result of the study would be the
basis for the recommendation.

This study specifically answered the following questions:

1. What is the level of comparison of academic interest of the respondents:
a. academic e-book; and
b. academic book;
2. Is there a significant difference between e-book and book in academic interest of
the respondents?

ARJAY D. PEPITO
3. Based on the findings, what recommendation may be proposed?
Summary
This study makes use of a 4-page, 28-item Experience using e-book
by Borchert Martin and Susan Levenstein obtained of Experience using
printed book. In identifying the respondents, researchers used simple
random sampling.
In gathering the data the researchers prioritized and complied with
the essential papers, which were the transmittal letter, informed consent,
and the survey questionnaires. In collecting data, four phases were
observed, which are the distribution phase, survey phase, retrieval
phase, tabulation, and tallying phase.

ARJAY D. PEPITO
Findings
Finding 1. Level of comparison of student’s academic interest in
academic e-book
There are sixty-four (64%) of the respondents who answer Neutral
about using e-book, which is the highest. Meanwhile, there are thirty-six
(36%) of the respondents who answer Disagree about using e-book, and
the rest has (0%) which is the smallest.
Based on the result, it revealed that most of the respondents are
Neutral about using e-book.

ARJAY D. PEPITO
Findings
Finding 2. Level of comparison of student’s academic interest in
academic book
There are fifty-four (54%) of the respondents who answer Neutral about
using printed book, which is the highest. Meanwhile, there are thirty-eight
(38%) of the respondents who answer Agree about using printed book. Also,
there are seven (7%) of the respondents who answer Disagree about using
printed book, one (1%) for Strongly agree, and there are zero (0%) of the
respondents who answer Strongly disagree about using printed book, which
is the smallest
Based on the result, it revealed that most of the respondents are Neutral
about using printed book
ARJAY D. PEPITO
Findings
Finding 3. The Significance difference between academic e-book
and book
Based on the result, there is significant difference between academic
e-book and book of the respondents. Which is because the P(T<=t) two-
tail is 1.13 is greater than the alpha which is 0.05. This implies that the
researchers must accept the null hypothesis. The null hypothesis is that:
There is significance difference between the academic interest of
students in academic e-book and book

ARJAY D. PEPITO
Conclusion
In conclusion, this pertains that either of the academic e-book and book
the academic interests of student are affected. In contrast, the academic
e-book and book may lose the academic interests of student. According
to Caspi and Blau (2009), Affect may change through a learning
experience itself and impacts the acquisition of knowledge leading to
behavioral change.
