WHAT IS AN ENERGY AUDIT ?
As per Indian Energy Conservation Act 2001,
“Energy Audit is the verification, monitoring and analysis
of use of energy including submission of technical report
containing recommendations for improving energy
efficiency with cost benefit analysis and an action plan to
reduce energy consumption".
PRINCIPLE BEHIND
ENERGY AUDIT
When the object of study is an occupied building,
then reducing energy consumption while
maintaining or improving human comfort, health
and safety are of primary concern. Beyond simply
identifying the sources of energy use, an energy
audit seeks to prioritize the energy uses according
to the greatest to least cost effective opportunities
for energy savings.
THE OBJECTIVE OF ENERGY AUDITING
The three top operating expenses are energy (both electrical and thermal),labour and materials.

Energy would emerge as a top ranker for cost reduction.

Primary objective of energy audit is to determine ways to reduce energy consumption per unit
of product output or to lower operating costs

Energy auditing provides a reference point for managing energy in the organixation
AVERAGE POWER CONSUMPTION
OF AN AVERAGE HOUSEHOLD
Estimates calculate that for a 1 or 2-bedroom house,
average gas consumption currently stands at around
8,000kWh, with electricity consumption
approximately 2,000kW. These figures rise to 12,500
kWh of gas and 3,100kWh of electricity for a
typical 3 or 4-bedroom house.

Air Conditioner 1000 W 4000 W

Ceiling Fan 60 W 70 W

Preliminary audit.
Detailed audit.
Preliminary audit is carried out in the limited time
say within 10 days and it highlights the energy cost

Preliminary and wastages in the major equipment’s and

processes. It also gives the major energy supplies and
demanding accounting. The questionnaire containing
audit the industrial details of energy consumption process
carried out, energy need to unit product; load data
etc. must be completed before the pre-audit visit
Detailed Energy Audit
Detailed energy audit, also known as comprehensive energy audit
includes engineering recommendations and well defined projects
with priorities. It account for the total energy utilised in plants. It
involves detailed engineering for options to reduce energy
consumption and also reduce cost. The duration of such studies is
generally from 1 to 10 weeks. The action plan in divided into
short term, medium term and long term actions
“Every act of energy
conservation…is more than just
common sense: I tell you, it is an
act of patriotism”
