ATTIRE AND BODY ACCESSORIES

OF THE CULTURAL
COMMUNITIES IN THE
PHILIPPINES

The Ivatans are from the
northernmost island of the
Philippines. It is known as
the Province of Batanes.
The place is blessed with
verdant greeneries. The
mountains here are
majestically found
everywhere.Fishes and
other sea creatures abound
in its wide and sometimes
turbulent wide sea. The
weather is hot and cold
throughout the year, but it is
often visited by typhoons.
KALINGA
They are skilled in loom weaving as shown by
the beautiful designs in their attire.
The Kalingas are from the province of
Kalinga. The kalingas are found in the
mountain ranges within the cordillera Central.
They are the tribe known for head hunting.
The kalingas engage in peace talks called
bodong. The bodong lessens war and head
hunting activities. It strengthens kinship and
harmonious relationships.

The Gaddang are mostly found


in Central Isabela,Nueva
Vizcaya,Quirino and Cagayan.
The gaddangs are engaged in
meaningful events that bind
that Cauayeno’s aspiration to
develop the City of Cauyan and
the Whole Province of Isabela.
ATI
The Atis are the only tribal group in
the Visayas. The Atis are found in
the Panay Island like Antique,
Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan, and Negros.
Their houses are screened against
the wind, sun and rain. Their
houses are built with strong but
light branches and forest materials.
These houses are temporarily built
next to streams during dry months
and can be moved to higher areas
and the floor elevated to knee-high
level during the rainy season to
protect them from being wet.
T'Boli
The T’Boli are found in the province of South Cotabato
in Southern Mindanao. Some T’Bolis are found in the
vicinity of Lake Buluan in the Cotabato Basin or in
Agusan del Norte..
The T’boli are engaged in farming using the slash
method. It is done by cutting the big trees and burning
the lower trees and bushes. Then they plant rice, corn,
cassava and other root crops.

They use all the accessories that they can wear in a


day. They don’t only use one accessory but plenty of
them to their heart’s desire. Almost all the clothing of
T'nalak the T’boli women are made of T’nalak cloth. This
T’nalak is a traditional cloth found in Mindanao island.

TIRURAY

The Tiruray are found in southwestern


Mindanao. They live in the northwestern
part of South Cotabato,Mindanao. They
are engaged in hunting, fishing, basket
weaving, agriculture, and gathering of
forest products.
Their weapons form part of their
costumes. Weapons consist of a dagger
with a wavy-edged blade, a spear, and a
round shield. The women wear sarongs
made from abaca fiber. They wear shirts
like men, too.
TAUSUG
The home of the Tausug is in
Jolo,Sulu in Mindanao. The
women wear blouses made of
plain material like satin and
decorated with gold or silver
buttons on the shoulders, breast
and on the fold at the end of the
sleeves.
The men wear tight and loose
trousers(kuput) matched with a
collarless short tailored jacket.
They wear abaca clothes using
red and black dye. The Tausug’s
patadyung is sometimes used as
headcover, blanket, and
wristband.
YAKAN
The Yakan are from the southern
Philippines in Mindanao. They
reside in the mountainous
interior part of Basilan Island.
Both males and females wear
colorful hand woven cloths.
The women wear short, tight-
fitting blouses. Both sexes wear
narrow cut plants. The
accessories include colorful
necklaces using a lot of beads,
shells, and coins.
