Classifying Different

Materials Based on Their

Properties
Definition of Terms.
Classifying- is categorizing something or someone into a
certain group or system based on certain characteristics.
Properties

• A property is anything you can describe or

measure. For example, if you look at
yourself as a physical ‘thing’, then you
have certain ‘properties’: a height, a
weight, a hair color, an eye color, a
certain arrangement of interesting
freckles - any feature which can be
observed and described, or measured is a
‘property’.
Materials

• the matter from which

A. Classifying Matter Based on Its ability to
Float on or Sink in Water.

Open your Textbook

on page 22-23. Teacher will show you an example of materials that
will float or sink in the water.
Another examples of Matter that will sink
or float in water:
Why do things float or sink?

What is density? Read the

definition in your textbook.
The formula for finding the density of an
object is:

÷

Why do coins sink?

The reason the coins sink in water

is because of an idea called density. The
coins have more density than the water, and
so the coins sink. Anything with more density
than water will sink in water, but other objects
that have less density than water will float.
Why ships, logs and balloons float in water?

Because materials
that are less in
density will float
over that are
greater in density.
Remember:

The floating or sinking of object in a

liquid depends on the density of both the
object and the liquid where the object is
placed.
