SOLVING QUADRATIC

EQUATIONS BY EXTRACTION
OF ROOTS

A.Simplify the given square roots
1. 6.
2. 7.
3. 8.
4. 9.
5. 10.

In the quadratic equation a the values of x that will
satisfy the quadratic equation are called the roots or
solutions of quadratic equation.

If b=0, then the quadratic equation is in the form a+c
=0.
If a=1 and b=0, then the quadratic equation is in the
form +c=0
Equation that can be written in the form a=c and = c
where c is any nonnegative real number, can be solved
by extracting the square root.
 Solvefor the roots of the given equations.
a. -4=0
b. +49=0
 a.
-4=0  b.+49=0
 =4 +49=0
X=± =-49
X=±2 The equation has no
X= 2 x= -2 real solutions or roots.
There is no real
number when squared
gives -49.
 Solvethe following quadratic equations
1. -16=0
2. +256=0
 Solve 5-50=0
 5-50=0
5=50
=
=10

 The roots of the equation are and -

 Solvethe following quadratic equations.
1. 3-18=0
2. 5-120=0
 If
the equation is in the form a=d or =d, where c and d are constants and d
≥ 0, we can also solve the quadratic equation by extracting the square root.

 Solve - 100 = 0
 - 100 = 0
= 100
x–5=±
x – 5 = ± 10
X-5 = +10 X – 5 = - 10 The roots are -5 and 15
or
x = 15 X=-5
 NOTES:
Some students do not write “±” sign after extracting the
square root. In solving problems similar to example 1. 2.
3, some students usually omit the “±” and then have no
clue why the answer is “x = - 5 and x = 15”. Always
remember to insert the “” when extracting the root, then
solve the resulting equations.

Solve the following quadratic equations.
1. - 64 = 0
2. - 81 = 0
 Solve - 12 = 0
