PROBLEM SOLVING
KEY WORDS WE NEED TO REMEMBER!
When solving word problems, let's follow the steps below:
STEP 1: Identify the problem.
STEP 2: Identify the given data.
STEP 3: Identify the operation(s) to be used.
STEP 4: Form the number sentence that will give the
answer to the word problem.
STEP 5: Solve the number sentence and write the
complete answer.

When solving nonroutine word problem, choose an

appropriate strategy to use.
LET'S LEARN!
EXAMPLE NUMBER 1: Mount Apo stands at 9,693 feet. The
world's second lowest point is also found in the Philippines.
This spot, known as the Philippine Deep, is located along the
Pacific Coast. It is estimated to have a depth of around
34,440 feet. Suppose Mount Apo is directly above the
location of the Philippine Deep. Find the distance from the
lowest point to the highest point in the Philippines.

STEP 1: IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM.

The distance from the lowest point to the highest
point in the Philippines.
LET'S LEARN!
STEP 2: IDENTIFY THE GIVEN DATA.
9,693 feet --> highest point (Mount Apo)
34,440 feet --> lowest point (Philippine Deep)

STEP 3: IDENTIFY THE OPERATION(S) TO BE USED.

Addition

STEP 4: FORM THE NUMBER SENTENCE THAT WILL GIVE

THE ANSWER TO THE WORD PROBLEM.
9,693 + 34,440 = N
LET'S LEARN!
STEP 5: SOLVE THE NUMBER SENTENCE.
1 1 1

9,693
+ 34,440
44,133
Therefore, the distance from the lowest point to the
highest point in the Philippines is 44,133 feet.
LET'S LEARN!
EXAMPLE 2: James and Iris climb Mount Apo this summer.
Based on a budget that they have prepared, they will spend
₱ 12,949 for airfare, ₱ 3,864 for food, and ₱ 5,903 for
accommodations and other expenses. How much will they
spend in all for the trip.

STEP 1: IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM.

Find the total amount that James and Iris will
spend for the trip.
LET'S LEARN!
STEP 2: GIVEN
₱ 12,949 -> amount for airfare
₱ 3,864 -> amount for food
₱ 5,903 -> accommodations and other expenses

STEP 3: OPERATION.
Addition

STEP 4: FORM THE NUMBER SENTENCE.

12,949 + 3,864 + 5,903 = N
LET'S LEARN!
STEP 5: SOLVE THE NUMBER SENTENCE.
1 2 1 1

₱ 12,949
3,864
+ 5,903
₱ 22,716
Therefore, the amount that James and Iris will spend
for the trip to Mount Apo is ₱ 22,716.
PROBLEM SOLVING AND APPLICATION!
CONCEPTS AND SKILLS:
DIRECTION: Encircle the information that is not needed to
solve the problem.

1. Jerry went to Bohol for a vaction. He had ₱ 20,000 as pocket

money. During his trip, he spent ₱ 2,380 for food, ₱ 6,355 for
transportation. He also stayed in a hotel where he paid ₱ 4,082
for the accommodations. How much did he spent in all?

2. Jerry learned that there are about 1,268 hills in Chocolate

Hills. The small hills are as low as 30 m, while the bigger ones
are as high as 50 m. If the shortest and the tallest hills are
placed one on top of the other, what will be their total height?
PROBLEM SOLVING AND APPLICATION!
CONCEPTS AND SKILLS:
DIRECTION: Write the needed number sentence for each
problem. Then solve for the answer mentally.

3. Kervin is climbing to the top of a hill. He has already

climbed 23 m, but still has 22 m to climb. How high is the
hill?

4. Kate is climbing a hill that is higher by 17 m than the hill

that Kervin climbed. How many meters does Kate need to
reach the top of the hill?
PROBLEM SOLVING AND APPLICATION!
CONCEPTS AND SKILLS:
DIRECTION: Answer completely.

5. Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, stands at

29,035 feet. The deepest point on Earth is the Marianas Trench in
the Pacific Ocean floor with a depth of 35,798 feet. If the two
spots were directly above and below to one another, what is the
distance between the world's highest and lowest point?

6. Joni and her family rented a boat to journey through the

Cagayan River. They traveled 1,500 m before stopping for lunch.
After lunch, they traveled 900 m more, then returned to the place
where they started. How far did the family travel for the entire
boat trip?

CONCEPTS AND SKILLS:
DIRECTION: Answer completely.

7. Every 10th day of May, fishing boats of different shapes and

sizes form a procession along a portion of the Cagayan River. Joni
counted 36 boats for the first batch of participants. For the next
batch, she counted 41 boats, and for the last batch, she counted
22. How many boats joined the parade? Compute for the answer
mentally.
