ESTIMATING
DIFFERENCE
KEY WORDS TO REMEMBER!
• MINUEND - the number from which another
number is to be subtracted.
• SUBTRAHEND - the number to be subtracted
from another number.
• DIFFERENCE - the number that results after
performing subtraction.
• ESTIMATED DIFFERENCE - the difference
obtained when the minuend and the
subtrahend are rounded off based on their
highest place values before subtracting.
LET'S REVIEW!
ROUND OFF THE FOLLOWING IN THEIR HIGHEST PLACE VALUE.
HIGHEST PLACE VALUE ESTIMATED VALUE
1. 580 hundreds 600
2. 3,459
3. 19,900
4. 89
5. 3,990
6. 990
7. 9,200
LET'S LEARN!

Example 1:
Every year, many tourists flock to Cebu to join the
celebration. In one hotel, 2,954 tourists stayed during
the festival. If 1,265 of those tourists are foreigners,
about how many Filipino tourists stayed at the hotel?
LET'S LEARN!
To estimate a difference, first write the numbers to
be subtracted in a column. Then round off the
minuend and the subtrahend based on their highest
place values. Write the rounded off numbers in
another column and then perform subtraction to find
the estimated difference.

2,954 tourists --> 3,000 tourists

- 1,265 tourists --> - 1,000 foreign tourists
2,000 Filipino tourists
LET'S LEARN!
EXAMPLE 2:
Find the estimated difference.
a. 4,023 - 597 b. ₱ 9,821 - ₱ 874

3 10

a. 4,023 --> 4,000

- 579 --> - 600
3,400
LET'S LEARN!
EXAMPLE 2:
Find the estimated difference.
a. 4,023 - 597 b. ₱ 9,821 - ₱ 874

0 9 10

b. ₱ 9,821 --> ₱ 10,000

- 874 --> - 900
₱ 9,100

Let's try this: 4,530 - 870

SUM IT UP!
The following are the steps in estimating
differences:

Step 1: Write the numbers to be subtracted in a column.

Step 2: Round off the minuend and the subtrahend

based on their highest place values.

Step 3: Subtract the rounded off numbers.

CONCEPT AND SKILLS!
Round off each numbers based on its highest place
value.

1. 578
2. 805
3. 999
4. 1,093
5. 4,839
CONCEPT AND SKILLS!
Write the rounded off values of the minuend and
the subtrahends. Then estimate each difference.

6. 764 - 296
7. 903 - 395
8. 1,654 - 904
9. 3,865 - 2,999
10. 7,509 - 4,497
CONCEPT AND SKILLS!
For 11 - 20, write the rounded off minuend or subtrahend in each box. Then find the
range of possible values for the minuends or subtrahends such that when is
performed, the given estimated difference is correct. An example is shown below:

Example:
Rounded off Value of N Range of Possible Values of N

N --> 1,000
- 766 --> - 800 950 to 1,499
200
CONCEPT AND SKILLS!
Rounded off Value of N Range of Possible Values of N

N -->
- 295 --> - 300
500

3,558 --> 4,000

- N --> - 8000
1,000

8,104 --> 8,000

- N --> - 8000
CONCEPT AND SKILLS!
Rounded off Value of N Range of Possible Values of N

10,452 --> 10,000

- N --> - 8000
5,000

N --> 8,000
- 875 --> - 900
3,100
PROBLEM SOLVING AND APPLICATIONS!
21. During a festival, a souvenir shop was able to
sell 456 Sinulog postcards. If there were originally
1,250 postcards, about how many postcards were
not sold?

22. Mrs. Hernando spent ₱ 2,349 for the decorations

of her store during the Sinulog festival. Of this
amount, she spent ₱ 865 to purchase light bulbs.
About how much was spent for the other decor
items?
PROBLEM SOLVING AND APPLICATIONS!
23. Luisa earned ₱ 10,325 from a summer job. She
used ₱ 9,450 of her earnings to pay for her tuition
fee and saved the remaining amount. She estimated
her savings to be ₱ 1,000. Is her estimate correct?

24. Justin has 800 stamps in his collection. After

giving some of his stamps to his brotther, he
estimates that he has about 400 stamps left. Which
is the possible number of stamps that Justin gave to
his brother, 359 or 451?
