INTRODUCTION :

WHAT IS STRESS ??????

* Right from the time of the birth till the last breath drawn, an individual is invariably exposed to
various stressful situation. The modern world which is achievement is a also a world of stress and has
been called the- Age of Anxiety and Stress.
Meaning of Stress
*According to Selyle (1956), - Stress is defined as the pressure experienced by a
person response to life demands. These demands are referred to as stressors and
include a range of life events. Physical factor( e.g.- cold, hunger, hemorrhage,
pain), environmental conditions and personal thoughts.
Causes of Stress
 Various factors have been closely regarded as the main causes of stress among
the students. Some students have found school life so hard that it can’t
accommodate them because of the kind of stress they face. Because of high
amounts of stress among the students, their performance has been greatly
affected. Some have even been forced to drop out of school simply because
they can’t bear the amount of stress they are undergoing through. Some of
the common causes of stress among the school students include the following;
 1. Academics
 2.Environment
 3. Extracurricular
 4. Peers
 5. Social Stress
 6. Attitude and believes
Indicator of Stress
 It may be physiological, psychological and cognitive:

 Physiological indicators:
The Physiological signs and symptoms of stress result from activation of
sympathetic and neuro-endocrine systems of body.

Psychological indicator
The manifestations: of stress includes anxiety, fear, anger, depression and
unconscious ego defense mechanism.

Cognitive Indicators:
Problem solving: the person assesses the situation or problem analyzes, chose
alternatives, carries out selected alternatives and evaluates.
Symptoms of Stress
 Insomnia
 Loss of mental concentration
 Absenteeism
 Depression
 Extreme anger and frustration
 Family conflict
 Migraine, Headaches and back problems
Sources of Stress

 There are many sources of stress, these are broadly classified as:
 Internal stressors: they originate within a person e.g.: cancer, feeling of
depression.
 External stressors: it originates outside the individual e.g.: moving to another
city, death in a family.
 Developmental Stressors: it occurs at predictable times throughout an
individual’s life. e.g.: child-beginning of school.
 Situational Stressors: they are unpredictable and occur at any time during
life. It may be positive or negative. e.g: death of family member,
marriage/divorce.
Types of Stress
 1 DISTRESS:
stress due to an an excess of adaptive demands placed upon us. Demands are so great that they
lead to bodily and mental damage .
e.g. : unexpected death of loved one.

2 EUSTRESS:
The optimal amount of stress, which helps to promote health and growth e.g.: praise from a
superior for hard working.

3 ACUTE STRESS:
its our immediate reaction to a new challenge, event ,or demand, and it triggers your fight.
e.g.: pressures of near –miss automobile accident or arguments with family.
DEFINATION OF STRESSORS

 Stressors are situations that are experienced as a perceived threat to one s


well being or position in life, especially if the challenge of realing with it
exceeds a person’s persons 'perceived available resources.
INTRODUCTION OF STRESS MANAGEMENT

stress management involves controlling in reducing the tension that occurs in


stressful situation by making emotional and physical changes. The degree of
stress and the desire to make the changes will determine how much change takes
place.

 Relaxation training is any method, process, procedure, or activity that helps a
person to relax: to attain a state of increased calmness: or otherwise reduce
levels of anxiety, stress or anger.

 A COMMON diaphragmatic breathing exercise is as follows:


 1 Sit or lie comfortably, with loose garments.
 2 put one hand on your chest and one on your stomach
 3 Slowly inhale through your nose or through pursed lips {to slow the intake
of breath}

DISADVANTAGE OF STRESS MANAGEMENT

Stress is a disadvantage because it can potentially raise heart rate and dweaken
your immune system
Also it can be a factor in poor decision making because under stress we may not
think logically or consider the
Consequences of the choice we make
CONCLUSION

 When we discuss stress and its management, we should understand that this
is not the exhaustive list of the stress factors and the various techniques.
 Stress can be confronted and reduced if and only if we understand our self
better, analyze the behavior and identify the stressors.
 The stress management techniques will work if we are honest with ourselves
and adopt the techniques in their fullest spirit
