X: Perfect Squares and Square

Roots
Goal: to identify and represent perfect squares, and determine their square roots, in various
contexts

Expectation B1.2

(Opening Engagement Question)
Homage to the Square
The famous Homage to the Square painting by Josef Albers has an area of 2,256.25 in².

What is the dimension of its

length and width?

Let’s learn more. . .
What are Square Numbers
Perfect Squares
Perfect squares - a number that can be expressed as a product of two identical natural
numbers

Therefore, 25 is a perfect square

Example: 5 ✕ 5 = 25

The highlighted red

are all perfect squares

YES

NO
Example - A Perfect Square
Lex wants to make a square shaped garden. He makes each side 3.5
m. What is the area of his garden?

Understand the question

The area of a square and a rectangle is l ✕ w. Since each side is the same, I can
multiply s ✕ s = s²

A = s²
Therefore, the area of Lex’s
= 3.5 m ✕ 3.5 m garden is 12.25 m²
= 12.25 m²
Square Roots
Square Root
Square root - a factor that, when multiplied by itself, equals the number

Example: 8 is the square root of 64 because 8 ✕ 8 = 64; Therefore √64 = 8

On a PC, hold
“Alt” and “2”, “5”,
“1” on the number
The sign for
square root √ keypad

On a Mac, press
“option” and “v”
Squares and square
roots are inverse
operations (they undo
or reverse each other)
Example

3² = 9 √9 = 3
Example - Square Roots
Lana wants to cut her fabric into a square that has an area of 25 m². How
long should each side be?

Understand the question

I know that A = s² I know A so I need to find s.

? ✕ ? = 25 I know 5 ✕ 5 = 25
This is the
A = s² same as
finding √25
25 m = s²
Therefore, each side is 5 m
