Extraction of Iron

Middle order reactive metal ,can be extracted by Smelting.

Smelting
• Smelting is a process of applying heat to an ore in order to extract a
base metal. 
Metals till Aluminum are extracted by
Electrolysis.
• Metals till lead are extracted by Smelting.
• Below lead metal are extracted by simple heating .
• Bottom metals are found in their elemental state.
Extraction of Zinc
• Zinc is present in nature as zinc sulfide.
• At first zinc blend is roasted in air to make zinc oxide .
• Zinc oxide is treated with carbon to make zinc metal and oxide of
carbon.
• Carbon displaces zinc from its oxide.
Extraction of Iron
• Hematite is iron ore that is reacted with carbon to extract iron from
its ore.
• Blast furnace is used for this purpose.
• Coke is the reducing agent.
• Coke, Hematite and limestone are introduced from top of the
container.
• Hot blasts of air are introduced from the base of the container.
• Impurities are removed by using Calcium carbonate.
• Slag is less dense than produced iron metal
Uses of slag
• Used in road construction.
• Stops oxidation of produced Iron from hot air blasts.
