• Whenever you read something and you
evaluate claims,
• Seek definitions
• Judge information,
• Demand proof,
• Question assumptions
• You process the author’s words.
• Make judgments after carefully
considering the text’s message.
Critical reading

• Involves scrutinizing at any


information that you read
or heard.
• Critical reading means not
easily believing information
offered to you by text.
BUT WHY SHOULD YOU READ CRITICALLY?

• Reading critically means you are thinking


critically.
• This shows that you do not simply accept
the message on the page.
• You bring to your reading your own
experience and perspective
• Use these to separate yourself from the
text.
• It helps you to judge for yourself what you
consider important, logical or right detail.

ANNOTATE WHAT YOU READ

• TECHNIQUE: underline, circle,


or highlight words, phrases or
sentences that contain
important details.
Outline the text
• You need to identify the main points of the
writer and list them down.

Summarize the text

• Get the main points and write


its gist in your own words. A
summary is usually one
paragraph long.
Evaluate the text
• It is the most challenging part.
• You are going to question the writer’s purpose
and intensions, as well as his/ her assumptions
in the claims.
• You should check the evidence / if they are
valid and from valid credible sources.
