PRACTICAL TIPS

FOR MAINTAINING
PERSONAL COMPUTERS
Reason:
 Due to the non availability of the proper antivirus
your system may be affected by dangerous viruses
which may come through external drives/network
drive/internet.
Solution:
 Contact telecom directorate ph. 42139 for
installation of anti virus.
 After installation pl. ensure daily virus checking
schedule is running properly.
 Before using any external drive, pl. scan for viruses
manually.
 Pl. check your antivirus is updating regularly
Step 1 - Right click on the your antivirus (Office Scan) icon on
task bar.

Step 2 - Click on the Component version tab.


Notice the Release dates.
Avoid saving important data on desktop
and ‘My Document’ folder also.
Reason:
 In case of recovery of the operating system, it will
automatically delete the data of desktop and my
document.
Always keep at least two partitions of
hard disk.
Save important data on drive other than
the root drive (normally C:/). A
Reason:
 In case formatting your system, you can only
format the root drive (c:/) thus you can save your
important data stored on other partition.
Make relevant folder related to the Subject.
Fill in meta-data parameters such as
keywords etc.
Reason:
 By this you can easily search your documents.

Keep important data in external device i.e.


DVD/CD/Pen drive/external hard disc also.
Reason:
 In case of Hard Disk failure, you can retrieve your
data from the external devices.
DVDs/CDs supplied with the
computer system (specially
Laptop) should be kept safely.
Your Laptop/computer system
can not be restored unless you
have the original DVDs or
restore point in external media
such as HDD/DVD.
Clean your recycle bin regularly.
Delete temp file regularly.
Reason:
 This will save your disk space.
Create ‘Good restore points’ periodically
A Restore Point is a record of your computer’s current
registry settings. If you think the system is working
perfectly fine, create a Restore Point at that junction.
To create a restore point follow the steps given -
Schedule Backup of your files
For schedule Backup, follow these steps :

Step 1 – Go to Control Panel and Click on Step 2 – Click on Backup files. You can also
‘Backup and Restore Centre’ do the Back up of your whole system by
Clicking on ‘Backup Computer’ button

Step 3 – It will ask for ‘Where do you want to save Backup’, then select the drive and click next
Step 4 – It will ask for ‘Which file types do you want to Backup’, then select the file types and
click next.
Step 5 – It will ask for ‘How often do you want to create Backup’, then select on ‘Daily’ and
select time and then click on ‘Save Setting and Exit’ button.
Uninstallunnecessary software to speed
up your computer.
Do not ‘delete’ a software – ‘do un-install’.


UseDisk clean up utility
Reason:
 This tool help you by freezing up more disk space that you can
use it. Disk cleanup would also check the trash bin and old
restore files that you may not need.
UseDisk defragmentation Utility
Reason:
 Fragmentation makes your hard disk do extra work
that can slow down your computer.
Defragmentation rearranges fragmented data so
your hard disk can work more efficiently.
Tosave energy, keep your machine in
power save mode.
Update your operating system periodically.
Always shutdown properly.
Do not frequently disturb the cable
connections.
Please keep at least one copy of your
important software, especially the
software related to your operating system.
Use UPS/spike buster to save data
damage/computer crash.
There should be a team of computer
experts of every directorate to solve local
problems.
