Blender?
01 What is Blender Animation Tool

• Blender is a 3D modeling, animation and rendering software

and is a free and open-source 3D computer graphics
software. Blender is most commonly used to create
animated films, art, 3D printed models, visual effects and
video games. Released in 1998, the program is written in C,
C++ and Python Languages.

Blender is freely available to Windows, Linux and MacOS.

02 History of Blender

• Developed as an in-house application by the

Dutch animation studio NatGeo

• Originaly authored by Ton Roosendaal

• The sofware was initially distributed as a

commercially developed application for 3D modeling
and animation

Sculpting
Suzanne
• In 1998, NatGeo was dissolved and Ton Roosendaal founded
Not a Number Technologies (NaN) which further developed
the software until 2002 when NaN went bankrupt.

• NaN released the last version which is 2.25 and added

a “test model” polygon named Suzanne.

• Suzanne is a low-polygon model with 500 faces, and is

often used as a quick and and easy way to test materials,
texture, and lighting setups.
File Format of Blender
• Blender featueres an internal filesystem that allowans
one to pack multiple scenes into a single file: .blend

• Can be used as a library to borrow pre-made content

• All scenes, objects, materials, textures, sounds,

images, post-production effects for an entire animation
or renderring can be stored in a single “.blend” file
