Listening in english is our ability to understand what other people are
saying very well, not only that but also the information we get through
other media. Listening is a process that includes listening to the sounds of
language, identifying, interpreting, and reacting to the meanings contained
in it.

To get entertainment or entertain yourself
To get meaning from sound

 The role of listening according to Dhieni (2008:4.6)

1. Become the basic for learning language.

2. Language skills will not be owned by someone if it is not started
with listening activities.
3. Become the basic for developing written language skills (reading and
writing).
4. Supporting other language skills if the speakers language is the
same as the listeners language, than the listener from the results of
their listening will be able to know the characteristics of the
speakers language.
5. Adding information or knowledge about advances in science and
technology or other information is not only obtained through
reading, but also through listening.
