What is message ?
• Message is a verbal or written data.
• Message can be in symbolic form.

Message Vs Information

• Message and information are similar in some

context.
• We can say that information is a subset of
message
What is document ?

• Document is a piece of written, printed or

electronic matter that provide information
or evidence or record in written or other
forms.
Document communication
• Sharing the contents of documents from
source to destination through the
communication channel by using several
protocols.
• Protocols are the set of rules that is used
to establish a relation between two or
more computers working on same or
distinct platforms.
Communication channels
• Known as “Lines”.
• May use one or more of the following
technologies:-
3. Physical communication lines (e .g ;
twisted pair of copper wires, coaxial
cables, fiber optics lines).
4. microwave lines ( e .g ; satellite, radio )
Word processors
• E.g;
• MS-Word, Excel, Power Point, Word pad
etc.
• Documents are created by using these
word processors.
• Creation of documents by using word
Processors is called word processing.
Classification of word
processing

• Based on software

• Based on hardware
Types of word processing based
on hardware

• Single workstation with small amount of

secondary storage.

• Multiple workstations sharing a secondary

storage device.
Document Distribution
• How document is distributed?
• By using word Processors documents are
created and distributed to others by using
modems that are used to modulate and
demodulate the data.
• The data is firstly clustered around a single
communication controller(e.g Router) and then
transmitted via a communication network to
different geographical area.
Facsimile Transmission (FAX)
• One of the fastest media of
communication.
• It scans the document from left to right,
Top to bottom, light to dark area and
sends the document in the form of
digitized image format .
• The receiver at the other end receives it in
the actual format by the help of
communication facilities.
What is CBMS?
• CBMS is an acronym for “Computer
Based Message System”.
• It is a simple but powerful s/w package for
sending, reading and forwarding message.
• It also provides the list mailing facilities in
a single command.
• Users availing this facility having a
separate “mail-box” in computer storage to
hold the message.
Computer based message
system
• E.g;
• Electronic-mail
• Video conferencing
• Online chatting
Today these are the best way of message
communication.
Sources of CBMS
• A purchased s/w for house users.
• An organization which provides a “mail-
box” on some cost.
• Additional service over a Public packet
switching network.
What is packet switching ?
• Packet switching networks place a tight
upper limit on block size, allowing
packets to be buffered in router main
memory instead of on disk.
• Advantages:-
3. No risk of data loss.
4. Reducing delay
5. Improve throughput
Public packet switching
• Used for huge data transmission for long
distances.
• Accomplish the packet switching job
through the telephone network to reduce
the delay time and secure transmission of
data.
Advantages of CBMS
• Speed of distribution and low preparation
cost.
• Asynchronous nature of CBMS.
• Communications are independent of both
time and location.
Redundancy
• It restricts the data duplication.
• It reduces the efficiency of a particular
transmission because more codes are
transmitted then are strictly required to encode
the message.
• However, some redundancy is very useful for
error control purpose.
• It is implemented in the communication system
through the transmission of parity bit.
Parity bit
• The use of parity bits is to detect and
correct the errors in data transmission.
• Parity bit is an extra bit that is added for
error checking.
