Impulse

Objective:
 Learnabout the concepts of impulse and how
can you apply it to a variety situation.
 Learnthe relationship between momentum
and impulse.
 Howto calculate impulse through a variety
examples
Impulse defined as…….
 The product of a force and the time the force acts
 Way to measure a change in momentum because it is not always possible
to calculate force and time individually since collision happen so fast
 A change in momentum in a short time requires a large force.
 A change in momentum in a long time requires a small force.
 The quantity that describes the effect of a net force acting on an object
(a kind of “moving force”)
 Represented by the symbol j
 Impulse a vector in the same direction.
 SI unit – Newton second (N s)
MOMENTUM- IMPULSE
As we discussed earlier, momentum is a measure of strength and
how difficult it is to stop an object. Represented by the symbol p
Formula for momentum p=mv
In this formula, momentum (p) equals mass (m) times velocity (v).
momentum is a vector which is equal to the product of mass and
velocity. But how is momentum related to impulse. When a force
acts on an object for a short amount of time, impulse is the
measure of how much the force changes the momentum of an
object.
The formula for impulse is:

Because impulse is a measure of how much the

momentum changes as a result of force acting on it
for a period of time, an alternative formula for
impulse looks like this:
IMPULSE- MOMENTUM RELATIONSHIPS
IMPULSE- MOMENTUM RELATIONSHIPS

fT  mV
Constant
Since TIME is directly related to the
VELOCITY when the force and mass
are constant, the LONGER the
cannonball is in the barrel the greater
the velocity.

Also, you could say that the force acts

over a larger displacement, thus there
is more WORK. The work done on the
cannonball turns into kinetic energy.
Impulse – Momentum Theorem

Ft  mv
IMPULSE CHANGE IN MOMENTUM

This theorem reveals some

interesting relationships such as
the INVERSE relationship
between FORCE and TIME
