HEALTH OF THE SKELETAL

SYSTEM
- The medical specialty dealing with disorders of the bone is
called orthopedics.
- Bone disorders may be congenital (from birth) or due to
accident, infection, or toxic drugs.
BONE DISORDERS:
Arthritis
- is a painful degenerative bone disorder that occurs when
joints become stiff and inflamed.
- This is due to the wearing away of the cartilage covering the
bones such that bone fuse.

- Is an acute inflammation of the bursa.

- Is characterized by joint deformity and impaired mobility as a
result of chronic inflammation of the synovial membrane and
the surrounding joints.

Scoliosis
- Is a disorder of the spinal column due to lateral or sideward
curvature.

Sprain
- Is an injury to the joints and its surrounding tissues caused by external
forces moving the joint in an unnatural position.
- It may be characterized by torn ligaments, tendons, and muscles or
detached cartilage inside a joint.
- It may be treated by bandaging the area to limit movement while
healing takes place.
FIRST AID TREATMENT FOR
FRACTURE
- Bones hove the ability to heal themselves throughout life.
- Osteoblast are bone-producing cells that keep depositing calcium to the bone.

are needed.

- That is why it is necessary to have a doctor to move the bone to its original place
and keep it immovable until the bone tissue regrows.
- When a fracture is suspended, the part of the body with the broken bone must be
laid on a flat surface to keep it from moving. It can be laid on a splint made of
hard cardboard and secured bandage.

- It is important to see a doctor for him to determine through an X-ray how much
damage is done.

WHAT MUST YOU DO TO KEEP YOUR
BONES HEALTHY AND SAFE?
- Always eat a balanced diet.
- Eat foods rich in calcium and phosphorus.
- Dairy product and green leafy vegetables are good sources of calcium.
- Wear footwear with non-slip soles to prevent slipping.
- Avoid walking on slippery pavements.
- Wear appropriate safety gears when engaging in any kind of sports
- Always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle or a motorcycle.
- Any harm done to your bones must be given immediate attention.
