Identification of Locations exceeding UML
and action to be taken
1. Acceleration Peaks above UML
• Value of VACI & VAC2 in Peak Information ( See ‘I’ in Block-‘C’
) should be compared with UML for acceleration peaks as
under:
 0.3g for sectional speed upto 110 kmph,
 0.25g for sectional speed 110 to 130 kmph,
 0.2g for sectional speed 130-160 kmph.

• Action: Suitable SR to be imposed after TRC run which should

be relaxed only after attending the track

Peak Distribution. (See ‘J’ in Block-‘B’).
• For location and Values see worst Peaks information for TW1 (
See ‘K’ in Block-‘C’).

with UML of mean gauge over 200m as given below and suitable SR to be
imposed at location where UML is exceeded, which should be relaxed only
after attending the track.

Identification of Locations exceeding NBML
and action to be taken
1. SD values of Unevenness and Alignment :
Blocks exceeding NBML are indicated as *** under column MI in Block
wise details (See ‘M’ in Block-‘A’)
Peaks values of Unevenness, Alignment, Twist and Gauge:
• Details of No of peaks of unevenness & alignment (on both chords) ,
twist (TW1) are seen from Band C (on short chord) and band Y (on
Long chord) (See NBML in Block-‘B’).

• Number of gauge peaks in NBML category and isolated

peak details for ‘Gauge’ from worst peak information is
presently not reported.
Identification of Locations exceeding
NBML
and action to be taken
• Location of these peaks, if any can be found from worst peak
information details by comparing value of peaks and corresponding
NBML value for concerned parameter.
• Average gauge for block in laser based TRC (‘L’ in Block-‘A’) should be
compared with NBML of mean gauge over 200m and blocks exceeding
these limit should be noted. These are not available in contact sensor
based TRC.
Action to be taken on NBML locations.
NBML locations to be attended on priority. No SR required to be imposed.
Identification of Locations exceeding PML
and action to be taken

• Blocks exceeding PML are indicated as ** under column MI in Block wise

details. (See ‘M’ in Block-‘A’).
• Blocks beyond PML are to be considered for planning of through Tamping of
whole block section by Track Machines.

• Note: Block A,B,C indicated above corresponds to concerned blocks

not to be planned on the basis of TQI. Maintenance of track should be planned
based on PML/NBML/UML for individual blocks.

Change in system of Maintenance
Present Method
• Machine deployment on the basis of periodicity
or Quantum of traffic passed (GMT)
• Attention of isolated urgent defects on the basis
of track parameter and acceleration peaks being
recorded by TRCs, Oscillograph cars and OMS
Revised Method
• Machine deployment for through packing of
whole block section on the basis of requirement
assessed through condition of track through
TRCs with Planned Maintenance Limits (PML)
• Attention of blocks requiring Need Based Maint.
(NBML) through deployment of machines.
• Immediate imposition of speed restrictions and
attention of isolated urgent defects (UML) on
the basis of TW, G and acceleration peaks being
recorded by TRCs, Oscillograph cars and OMS. 38
Maintenance Criteria Approved by Board
Maintenance on exceeding NBML
IDENTIFICATION:
from online reports from TRC ; or
by offline software ; or
from TMS based reports (at present this is not
available)
ACTION : Isolated/planned attention by machine
1. All such blocks and isolated spots should  be
attended within a reasonable time of TRC run so that
good ride quality is maintained and the track geometry
does not exceed the UML.
contd…
Maintenance on exceeding NBML (contd..)

2. The reasonable time would be different for different

sections depending upon the magnitude of defects,
cause of the defect ,Traffic Density of the section,
Maximum Permissible Speed of the section etc.

3. If the gap between two successive NBML locations in

block sections/yards is less than/equal to 200 mts. (1 TRC
block). This Gap should also be tamped while attending
these NBML locations.
4. While attending an NBML block in the yard in which
any portion of the turnout falls, the entire turnout (along
with approaches) should be tamped.
Maintenance Criteria Approved by Board
Planning of  through tamping based on
PML:
IDENTIFICATION: Same
ACTION:
• The Block Section for any main line should be
treated from block (TRC Block of 200mtr) of last
SEJ of preceding station to block of first SEJ of
current station. Both the blocks containing above
SEJ would be excluded from the block section on
any particular line (UP & DOWN separately).

and yard

Planning of  through tamping based on
PML (contd…)
• Similarly the Yard would be treated from a Block
of 200 meter. containing 1st SEJ to Block of last
SEJ on any particular line (UP & DOWN
separately) of the concerned station/yard.
• The block section should be planned for through
tamping if the percentage of blocks exceeding
PML is more than 40%.
• Yards should be planned for through tamping if
the percentage of blocks exceeding PML is more
than 50%.
Method for finding PML / NBML blocks
( by Offline analysis software of TRC )
• The chainages of 1st and last SEJ of every yard of the section ( on the
line for which analysis is to be done ) should be noted down. These
details may be taken from RDPS data.

• Based on above details, Km and block no ( TRC block of 200 m ) for

1st and last SEJ of every yards of the section should be noted.

• Now ‘ EXCEPTION REPORT FOR BLOCKS REQUIRING PLANNED OR

URGENT MAINTENANCE (CHORD MODE)‘ should be generated using
Offline Analysis software of TRC.
• Note Offline Software is attached in the Folder Named “TRC OFFLINE”.
Pl Install the same on your system and then explain Hands on to
Trainees

• One such analysis from Km 150 to 160 of TRC run on date 25-4-20 of
Ratlam - Kota section of W Rly has been done by RDSO.
Method for finding PML / NBML blocks
( by Offline analysis software of TRC )
contd.

• In the table generated through above offline report, the blocks

which are in NBML limits have values of ‘Max Value’
(2nd last column of table ) as ‘1.0 or more’ .
• Similarly the blocks which are in PML limits have values of
‘Max Value’
(2nd last column of table ) as ‘Less than 1.0 ’ .
Method for finding PML / NBML blocks
( by Offline analysis software of TRC )
contd.
• Based on above table and details of SEJ locations,
we can determines the NBML / PML locations in
yards and block sections as identified.
• Example: Let's assume, last SEJ of station A is at
Km 150.500 i.e. 3rd block of Km 150-151, 1st SEJ of
station B is at Km 158.350 i.e. 2nd block of Km 158-

• The locations requiring Need Based maintenances in

terms of peaks are to be identified using offline software
by generating reports exceeding C limits on short chord

based TRCs)

• In Contact sensor based TRCs Number of Peaks exceeding

NBML values can be obtained from Peak distribution
given Kilometre exception report and their values and
location from worst peak information.
