OZONE LAYER
The ozone layer or ozone shield is a region of Earth's stratosphere that absorbs
most of the Sun's ultraviolet radiation.

The ozone layer was discovered in 1913 by the French physicists Charles

Fabry and Henri Buisson.

The ozone layer is a layer of gas consisting of O3 molecules ,called ozone, that
forms when free oxygen molecules bond to O2 molecules
ULTRA- VOILET RADIATION
• On a daily basis, the sun radiates its energy towards Earth. One form of this
energy is Ultraviolet radiation, also known as a UV rays.

• UV rays penetrate the Earth’s atmosphere at 3 slightly different wavelength

called UV-A, UV-B and UV-C rays.
IMPORTANCE
• UV rays are relatively high energy waves that provides Earth with the warmth it needs to
support life as we know it.

• The stratospheric ozone layer completely stops the penetration of UV-C rays and
eliminates most of the UV-B rays.

• Therefore, the ozone layer protects life on Earth from the harmful effects of solar radiation
on a daily basis.
OZONE DEPLETION
• The ozone layer can be depleted by free radical catalysts, including nitric oxide (NO), nitrous
oxide (N2O), hydroxyl (OH), atomic chlorine (Cl), and atomic bromine (Br).

• Since 1928, Chlorofluorocarbons have been produced, as these CFCs have been released
into the atmosphere, the level of ozone in the stratosphere has decreased.

• Since the 1970’s the ozone hole has been increasing in size over the Antarctic.
EFFECTS OF OZONE DEPLETION

• Ozone depletion affects global warming and ultimately climate change.

• Direct exposure to ultraviolet radiations leads to skin and eye cancer in animals.

• The humans will be directly exposed to the harmful ultraviolet radiations of the sun
due to the depletion of the ozone layer. This might result in serious health issues
among humans, such as skin diseases, cancer, sunburns, cataract, quick ageing
and weak immune system.
Solutions to Ozone Layer Depletion
• Reduce the use of ozone depleting substances. E.g. avoid the use of CFCs in
refrigerators and air conditioners, replacing the halon based fire extinguishers, etc.
• The vehicles emit a large amount of greenhouse gases that lead to global warming
as well as ozone depletion. Therefore, the use of vehicles should be minimized as
much as possible.
• Use Eco-friendly Cleaning Products
