ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE

BY: HANNAH HARDY

PROBLEM:
How is a wires electrical resistance related to its length?
HYPOTHESIS:
It is believed that increasing wire length will increase
the measured resistance value of the wire.
• Ohmmeter
• 26 g Nichrome 80 wire
MATERIALS: • Ruler
• Wire cutter
1. Cut the Nichrome 80 wire into
PROCEDURE: 1”, 2”, 3”, and 4” pieces using
your wire cutter and ruler.
2. Place the probes on each end
of the wire. You will want to
get it as close to each end as
possible and press down.
3. Record reading and move to
the next piece of wire until you
have measured each wires
resistance.

Length of Wire in Inches

As shown in the graph, it was found that the resistance of the

wire increases as the wire length increase.
CONCLUSION:
The data collected proves the hypothesis. As you increase a wire’s
length, the electrical resistance will also increase.

During this experiment I was able to use an ohmmeter, which is

something I have never done before. It was a fun and interesting
experiment that helped me understand how using different wire
lengths changes the electrical resistance of the wire.
