• The terms respiration and breathing are often confused but
they do have different meanings.
• Breathing describes just the movement of air in and out of the
lungs.

• Respiration covers the whole process by which oxygen is
taken into the body, transported to the cells and used in a
reaction with glucose to release energy, with the production
of water and carbon dioxide as waste products.

The parts of the respiratory system
• The function of the respiratory system is to provide means of
exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide that meets the needs of the
body, whether it is active or at rest.
• It can be divided into three parts: the air passages and tubes, the
pump that moves the air in and out of the system and the
respiratory surface.
