Basic Sentence Pattern

BASIC SENTENCE PATTERN

A. S-IV (SUBJECT- INTRANSITIVE VERB)


Intrasitive Verb: does not require an object.

The young boy jumped.

We relaxed.
We can also add an adverbial

My sister slept very early.


The girl reads silently.
The children played in the sand.
B. S-LV-C (SUBJECT-LINKING VERB-
COMPLEMENT)

Linking Verb: it connects the subject with its


complement (be verbs or sense verbs)

Complement/Subjective Complement:
a noun or adjective that describes/modifies the
subject.
B. S-LV-C (SUBJECT-LINKING VERB-
COMPLEMENT)
Mariel’s face looks familiar.
S LV C

Mr. Ali is tall and dark.


The coffee tastes bitter.
Today was fun as usual.
Complements can also be an adverbs and
prepositional phrases.

Examples:
She is upstairs.

He is in her studio.
C. S-TV-DO (SUBJECT-TRANSITIVE VERB-
DIRECT OBJECT)

Transitive Verb: has or takes an object.

Direct Object: indicates the person or thing


the receives the action verb.

Anthony makes a hat.

The king pronounced the new rules.
Last night, they sang songs on the beach.
Some adverbials are necessary, some
are optional.

D. S-TV-IO-DO (SUBJECT-TRANSITIVE VERB
-INDIRECT OBJECT-DIRECT OBJECT)

Indirect Object: indicates the person or thing


that receives what is being done or given.

Anthony wrote her sister a letter.

Complement/Objective Complement:
a noun or an adjective that qualifies the
direct object.

The little prince made himself a hero.

Students considered Teacher Ann a parent.

I considered that the best trip ever.


F. V-S Inverted Pattern (VERB-SUBJECT)

Here comes the bride.
