- As found in the Republic Act # 10157, section 5, states that the Mother
Tongue-based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) method shall hereby

Reforms in the DepEd Philippines
Enhanced Basic Institutionalization Mother Tongue-based Senior High
Education of Kindergarten Multilingual Education Contextualized Curriculum School

- Base from the Republic Act No. 10533 or the Enhanced Basic
Education of 2013, stipulates to “make education learner-oriented and
responsive to the needs, cognitive and cultural capacity, the
circumstances and the diversity of learners, schools, and communities
through the appropriate languages of teaching and learning, including
mother tongue as a learning resource.” Hence, as mandated by law,
contextualization becomes a major thrust or focus of the Department of
Education.
- To contextualize curriculum, teachers use authentic materials, activities,
interests, issues and needs from learners’ lives to develop classroom
instruction.
- Contextualized curriculum helps students learn language skills by
teaching the skills using the authentic contexts in which students must
use those skills in the real world.
The process for contextualizing curriculum includes these steps:
1. Identify learners’ needs, issues and themes.
2. Gather information and materials.
3. Create and teach lessons; practice skills in the classroom.
4. Put new skills into action in the real world.
5. Reflect on and evaluate the contextualized lessons.
6. Revise and add new information.

- The Implementation of K-12 Program is one of the two most

significant educational reforms in the Philippines aside from
the Free Higher Education.
- Three years since the Enhanced Basic Education Act (EBEA,
known as the K-12 law) was signed, the Philippines has
finally embarked on its most ground-breaking change to the
schooling system in decades, the K-12 reform.
- K-12 extends compulsory schooling to grades 11 and 12,
adding two years to secondary school, and makes secondary
education compulsory.
- Prior to its implementation, the Philippines was the only
country in Asia, and one of only a few in the world, to have a
basic education system of just 10 years.
- In August 2016, 1.5m Filipino children attended 11th grade,
with senior school students choosing between four tracks
through the system: academic, technical-vocational, sports or
the arts.
