METRIC CONVERSIONS
METRIC MEASUREMENT (SOLID) COMMON CONVERSIONS
1 milligram (mg) 1,000 micrograms (mcg)
1 gram (g) 1,000 milligrams (mg)
1 kilogram (kg) 1,000 grams (g)

METRIC MEASUREMENT (LIQUID) COMMON CONVERSIONS

1 milliliter (mL) 1 cubic centimeter (cc)
1 mL 1,000 microliters (mcl)
1 cc 1,000 mcl
1 liter (L) 1,000 mL
1L 1,000 cc
METRIC CONVERSIONS
METRIC MEASUREMENT (LENGTH) COMMON CONVERSIONS
10 millimeters (mm) 1 centimeter (cm)
100 cm 1 meter (m)
1,000 mm 1m
HOUSEHOLD CONVERSIONS
MEASUREMENT METRIC EQUIVALENTS
1 teaspoon (tsp) 5 mL
1 tablespoon (tbs) 3 tsp ; 15 mL
1 ounce (oz) 30 mL
1 cup (C) 8 oz
1 pint (pt) 2C
1 quart (qt) 4C
1 oz 30 g
1 pound (lb) 16 oz
1 lb 454 g
2.2 lb 1 kg
1 inch 2.54 centimeters (cm)
TEMPERATURE CONVERSIONS
DEGREES C TO F DEGREES F TO C
Equation: (degrees C x 9/5) + 32 Equation: (degrees F – 32) 5/9
Example: 38 degrees C Example: 98.6 degrees F
 38 x 9/5 = 68.4  98.6 – 32 = 66.8
 68.4 + 32 = 100.4 degrees F  66.8 x 5/9 = 37 degrees C
MISCELLANEOUS
MEASUREMENTS
 Units (U): used in insulin and heparin dosages
 International Units (IU): used for vitamins, such as Vit D 600 IU
 Milliequivalents (mEq): used in electrolyte replacement such as Potassium 40 mEq
 Percentages: used in intravenous (IV) fluids such as 0.9% Normal Saline IV fluid,
meaning 9 g NaCl are diluted in 1000 mL water
 Ratios: used in medications like Epinephrine 1:1000, meaning 1 gram of
Epinephrine is diluted in 1000 mL of fluid (equivalent to 1 mg/mL)
BASAL METABOLIC RATE
MALE:
BMR = Weight in lbs. x 10.9 = ____ cals

Example: 50 kg
 Convert kg to lbs. = 50 x 2.2 = 94 lbs
 BMR = 94 lbs x 10.9 = 1,024.6 or 1,025 cals
BASAL METABOLIC RATE
FEMALE:
BMR = Weight in lbs. x 9.8 = ____ cals

Example: 47 kg
 Convert kg to lbs. = 47 x 2.2 = 103.4
 BMR = 103.4 lbs x 9.8 = 1,013.32 or 1,013 cals
BODY MASS INDEX
BMI = Weight in kg
(height in m)2

Example: Weight: 55 kg ; Height: 4’11’’

 Convert in. to cm = 4’11’’ x 30.48 (constant) = 125.2728 or 125 cm
 Convert cm to m = 125 cm x 0.01 = 1.25 m
 BMI = 55 kg
(1.25m)2
 BMI = 55 kg
1.56
= 35.25

 Indication: Obese Type 1

DBW = 122 lbs (51 kg)
A. BODY
For women 5 ft (1.52m)
MASS tall, DBW = 106 lbs (48
INDEX kg)
FORMULA For both, add 4 lbs (1.8 kg)
for every inch above 5 ft.
DBW (kg)
= Desirable BMI x Height
