Outline
• Fiber Reinforced Concrete
• Self Healing Concrete
• High Performance Concrete
Fiber Reinforced Concrete
• In this type of concrete, short fiber of glass, steel and polypropylene
have been added.
• The length of these fibers is from 19 to 64 mm.
• The main role of these fibers is to resists plastic shrinkage cracking
which occur in early stages of curing.
• Their contribution in mechanical properties of hardened concrete is
very small.
• Blend of Steel-Polypropylene fibers also resists long term cracking
which is due to thermal stresses and drying shrinkage.
• Reinforcing concrete with fiber also improved resistance shock,
abrasion and impact.
• Glass fiber are added to produce light weight concrete known as
GFRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete).
• Please watch next two videos, one is related to general introduction
about Fiber Reinforced Concrete while second one shows the crack
resistance of Fiber Reinforced Concrete. Let’s watch…
Self Healing Concrete
• Self healing process is actually healing of any crack or deformation
automatically.
• This process is inspired by healing phenomenon of wound in human
body.
• These concrete have an ability to heal the crack without foreign
repairing work.
• They are in development phase.
• They have better protection of steel reinforcement against corrosion.
• They are more durable than conventional concrete.
• They are produce by using recycled plastic waste.
• The use of recycled plastic waste not only provide a useful utilization
of wastage material but also concrete strength with self healing
characteristics.
• One of the good topic for FYP.
• Previous batches have work on self healing polymers.
• I am sharing two videos, please watch this very interesting videos.
High Performance Concrete (UHPC)
• They are produce by careful mix. design to achieve 200 Mpa strength
in a concrete.
• The strength of normal residential concrete is around 28 MPa.
• The ingredients of this concrete include cement, silica fume, silica or
quartz flour (flour means extremely fine ground), fine sand , high
range of water reducer, water and steel fibrous reinforcing.
• The resultant concrete is stronger, less permeable, and more durable
than conventional concrete.
• Reinforcing through steel microfibers increase tensile strength along
with ductility.
• Instead of steel fibers, densely
arrayed fine steel mats are also
added to get ultra high
performance concrete having high
toughness (to sustain impact
loading like the collision of
aircraft, missile, etc) along with
high tensile strength and ductility.
Light Transmitting Concrete
• This type concrete is made from precast concrete block or panels
with embedded optics fibers (optical fibers).
• The allow light to pass from it with maintaining strength and
durability of concrete.
• They are use in non-structural partition (where load is not applied
over them and use just for partition), countertops and other
architectural elements.
