What is It
Direct Speech and Reported
Speech
SLIDESMANIA.CO

Direct Speech
 Are sentences that give the exact words of the speaker.
 Has two parts: the introductory part which is usually set off by comma, and the
quoted part which gives the exact words of the speaker and enclosed with
quotation marks.

Example: “We must accept the new normal now,” he said.

Changing Direct
Speech to
Reported Speech

― Irene M. Pepperberg
SLIDESMANIA.CO

To change Direct speech to reported

speech
you must observe two things
1. Using the correct introductory word.
2. Forming the correct verb.
SLIDESMANIA.CO

A. Using the correct Introductory Word

 When the direct speech is a declarative sentence, the comma and
the quotation marks are removed and, in its place, the introductory
word that is used.

Example:
Direct Speech - “We must accept the new normal now,” he said.
Reported Speech - He said that we must accept the new normal now.
SLIDESMANIA.CO

 When the direct speech is an imperative statement, the

introductory word used is the infinitive form (to + base form of the
verb) of the verb in the quoted part..

Example:
 Direct Speech - “Do your best,” the teacher said.
 Reported Speech - The teacher told us to do our best.
SLIDESMANIA.CO

 When the Direct Speech is a YES-NO question involving a

choice, the introductory word used is whether.

Example:
 Direct Speech - “Would you like red or blue bag?” she asked.
 Reported Speech - She asked whether I liked a red or blue bag.
SLIDESMANIA.CO

 When the YES-NO question is answerable by yes or no

only, the introductory word used is if.

Example:
 Direct Speech - “Are you leaving?” she asked.
 Reported Speech – She asked if I was leaving.
SLIDESMANIA.CO

 When the Direct Speech is introduced by question

words what,
who, whom, why, where, when, which, whose, or how
the same question word is used as the introductory word.

Example:
 Direct Speech – The reporter asked the Mayor, “What is your insight about
this pandemic?”
 Reported Speech – The reporter asked the Mayor what his insight was
about that pandemic
SLIDESMANIA.CO

Let’s practice!
Instruction: Fill in the blanks with the
appropriate introductory word. Remember to
analyze first what kind of sentence is the quoted
part.
SLIDESMANIA.CO

“We have studied about roots, stems, leaves, and flowers of plants,” we
replied.

We replied ______ we had studied about roots, stems, leaves, and

flowers of plants.

Answer:
We replied that we had studied about roots, stems, leaves, and flowers
of plants.
SLIDESMANIA.CO

“Are shrubs different from bushes?” she inquires.

She inquires _____ shrubs are different from bushes.

Answer:
She inquires if shrubs are different from bushes.
SLIDESMANIA.CO

“What do plants give off which is necessary to man?” She asks.

She asks _____ plants give off which is necessary to man.

Answer:
She asks what plants give off which is necessary to man.
SLIDESMANIA.CO

B. Using Correct Verb Form

 When the verb in the introductory part of the direct speech is in the
present tense, the verb in the reported speech remains the same.

Example:
 Direct Speech –The President says, “We need to obey rules and
regulations.”
 Reported Speech – The President says that we need to obey rules and
regulations.
SLIDESMANIA.CO

 When the verb in the introductory part of the direct speech is in the past
tense and the verb in the quoted part is in the present tense
expressing general truth, the same present form is used in the
reported speech.

Example:
 Direct speech – She said, “The coronavirus disease is an infectious
disease.”
 Reported speech - She said that the coronavirus disease is an infectious
disease.
SLIDESMANIA.CO

 When the verb in the introductory part of the direct speech is in the past
tense, the following changes in the verb in the reported speech occur.

A. Verbs in the present tense are changed to the past tense

Example:
 Direct speech – Josie said, “I am excited about the online class.”
 Reported speech - Josie said that she was excited about the online class.
SLIDESMANIA.CO

B. Verbs in the past tense either remain in the past tense or are changed
to the past perfect tense

Example:
 Direct speech - “We wanted to go back to work,” they insisted.
 Reported speech – They insisted that they have wanted to go back to work.
SLIDESMANIA.CO

Let’s practice!
Fill in the blank with the correct form of the
verb..
SLIDESMANIA.CO

She repeated, “God knows no such law.”

that God knows no such law.
She repeated __________________.
SLIDESMANIA.CO

She says, “I look up to God for justice.”

that she looks up to God for justice.

She says _____________________.
SLIDESMANIA.CO

“You are right,” she said.

that I was right

to chomp away on bamboo!

There are more kangaroos than humans in Australia.

It is estimated that more than 50 million kangaroos live there. They are Australia’s national symbol and appear on
postage stamps, coins, and airplanes.

Koalas are even more lazy than cats.

Koalas don’t have much energy and, when not feasting on leaves, they spend their time dozing in the branches.
Believe it or not, they can sleep for up to 18 hours a day!
