BIOLOGICAL
DEVELOPMENT
DEFINITION:
 Biological development, the progressive changes
in size, shape, and function during the life of
an organism by which its genetic potentials
(genotype) are translated into functioning
mature systems (phenotype). Most modern
philosophical outlooks would consider that
development of some kind or other
characterizes all things, in both the physical
and biological worlds. Such points of view go
back to the very earliest days of philosophy.

• Dr. Arnold Lucius Gesell
• June 21 1880 - May 29 1961
• Psychiatrist and Pediatrician
• Father of Child Development
• Professor at Yale University
• He believed that a child’s behavior
develops in a pattern predictable way.
GESELL MATURATIONAL
THEORY
• FOCUSED ON THE PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEVELOPMENT OF
CHILDREN.
• DEVELOPMENT IS ALSO INFLUENCED BY FACTORS SUCH AS
ENVIRONMENT, FAMILY BACKGROUND, PARENTING STYLES,
CULTURAL INFLUENCES, HEALTH CONDITIONS, AND EARLY
EXPIERNCES WITH PEERS AND ADULTS.
• THE FIRST THEORIES TO SYSTEMATICALLY STUDY THE STAGES
OF DEVELOPMENT.
• CEPHALOCAULAD PROGESSION “HEAD TO LEGS”.
• ABNORMAL OR DEVIANT
• “INTRINSIC” DEVELOPMENT IS MORE IMPORTANT VERY LITTLE.
• MATURATION AND GROWTH ARE INTER RELATED.
