TEACHING
APPROACHES
TEACHING APPROACH

Teaching approach is a set of principles, beliefs, or

ideas about the nature of learning which is translated
into the classroom. An approach is a way of looking at
teaching and learning.
TEACHING APPROACHES
◦ Language Based Approach
◦ Paraphrastic Approach
◦ Information Based Approach
◦ Personal Response Approach
◦ Moral-Philosophical Approach
◦ Stylistic Approach
LANGUAGE BASED APPROACH
◦ Language Based Approach is one of the method of teaching
literature in English that used literary text for the specific drills
design to build the languages skills rather than focusing on
the literary skills.
◦ It is an approach for teaching literature which attempts to
improve the students' linguistic competence through the use
of literary text.
PARAPHRASTIC APPROACH

Paraphrastic approach is primarily paraphrasing and

rewording the text to simpler language or use other languages to
translate it.
Teachers use simple words or less complex sentence
structure to make the original text easy to understand.
It is teacher-centred and does not contribute much interesting
activities towards students.
INFORMATION-BASED APPROACH

Information-based approach focuses on providing

knowledge and information to students. It is teacher-
centered and demands a lot of teacher’s input in giving
students various contents of literary text like on historical,
political, cultural and social background.
PERSONAL RESPONSE APPROACH

Personal-response approach encourages students to

make sense of their experiences and personal lives
with text themes by encouraging them to associate
the subject matters of the reading texts with their
personal life experiences.
MORAL-PHILOSOPHICAL APPROACH

Moral-Philosophical Approach contends that learners seek

moral values from a particular literary text while reading it. It helps
students to be aware of moral and philosophical values that lies in
their reading and identify them.
STYLISTIC APPROACH

Stylistic approach implies literary criticism and

linguistic analysis. It is for students to appreciate and
understand in a deeper manner of the literary text. It helps
students to interpret the text meaningfully and develops
language awareness and knowledge. It analyzes the
language prior to the elements of literary text (Aydin, 2013).
