Tool of IE

Compiled By: Esubalew Gebrie

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
July ,2012 E.C
IE Applications
All services/ manufacturing industries
 Manufacturing plants
 Health services
 Government organizations
 Banking
 Hospitality
 Retail
 Logistics
Use of IE Tools
 To improve productivity by optimum utilization of
resources
 Reduced wastage
 Increase output in a given situation
 Increase productivity
Tool of IE and organizational structure
To improve productivity by optimum utilization of resources
 Work study: method study & work measurement
 Motion Economy
 Financial and Non Financial Incentives
 Value analysis
 Production ,Planning and Control
 Inventory control
 Job Evaluation
 Material Handling Analysis
 Human Engineering
 Operations Research
 System Analysis
Work study: method study & work
measurement
 Work study is a tool available in industrial engineering
and that used to increase productivity
 To increase productivity it uses two approaches
1. Method study
2. Work measurement

Method study
 which helps improving the exciting method of doing
the job or developing the new method
 Idea behind this is eliminating non productive time
Work measurement
 Quantification of the work (measuring time required
to complete the work)
 For this techniques :
 Time study
 Work sampling

 Standard data method

 Predetermined Time Motion Study (PTMS)

Motion Economy

 The target of motion study is to avoid the un necessary

movement of man, machine and material
 Different charts, diagram and models are used to see
facility, section or equipment's are arranged and how
the movements are done during performing the job.
 Micro motion tool is used to identify the movement of
the body during the job and eliminate the un
necessary or un productive movements
Financial and Non Financial Incentives
 When workers motivated:-
 Available effective time increase

 Wastage time decrease

Incentives may be given in cash/ Bonus. (financial)

Incentives may be given in kind. (Non financial)
Value analysis
 The goal of value analysis is reduce the cost of the
item produced or service being provided.
 In this approach each step of the production of goods
or services should be seen really it is needed or
not( like related to the design geometry, kind of
material, manufacturing process, quality of the
product match or not the spec)
 Here the focus is reducing the cost of item/service
Production ,Planning and Control
 Plan for production may be short term or long term
 Planning for production is identifying materials,
quantity, volume, inventory, man power etc
 Control is needed to see the production is going as per
plan or not . If change is happend, looking another
methods to achieve the goal
Inventory control
 Inventory is holding of materials in the form of finished or
partially finished
 Two reasons to maintain the inventory
 To deal with ups and downs related with the

production or demand
 To satisfy the demand of items as and when they are

needed.
 Various approaches are used to find out what amount of
quantity of items must be kept in store
Job Evaluation
 Job evaluation is evaluate the job, factors improving
the job, what are the things expected from the job etc
Material Handling Analysis

 It is very important aspect related to production

 As per the nature or type of the material it should be
arranged to get the following out puts
 Reduced movement and automatically Reduced
cost.
When we make it should be minimum interference
with other production activities going on in the
organization.
Human Engineering
 Also called ergonomics
 Systems, equipment's, machines are designed in
Easy to use
Less effort
Less fatigue
Easy control
 It also include organizations working and rest schedule
 Designing work place
Height of table/chair
Lighting provided during the work is done
Vibration
Temprature
Operations Research
 Mathematical approach for identification of the best
way of doing the things.
 Commonly used in logistics to handle transport
related problems
System Analysis
 System analysis: study and construction of systems.
 Study of each part of the system, both as an individual
and in relation to the whole in order to design, modify
or improve the system in order to increase utilization,
decrease wastage, increase productivity
