Exploring History of Jabalpur

History –
The Kalchuri dynesty took over the place in AD
875 and made it their capital. In the 13th century
the Gonds won it over and made it their capital.

By 16th century Jabalpur turned into the

powerful kingdom of Gondwana.

Geography –
Jabalpur Jabalpur lies just north of the Narmada River
in a rocky basin surrounded by low hills that
are dotted with lakes and temples.

Culture-
Jabalpur is a city equipped with colorful culture
and rich heritage and due to its cultural richness,
the city is referred to as Sanskardhani means
land of various cultures.

Madan
Mahal Fort

37th Gond ruler “Madan
Singh”.

Although Madan Mahal fort


is named as fort but basically
it was a military post which
was used as watch tower
and military barrack. Main
fort was in plains called
Garha fort. It was the Garha
fort where Kings and royal
family members use to stay.

During our Madan Mahal fort visit, we can see the structure
having rooms, stables, secret passages, ancient scripts, corridors
etc. All these arrangements indicated that it was basically a
military post where army men and their horses are kept. Now a
days it is a historical monument in Jabalpur city and important
place to visit during city tour.
Kamania
Gate

It is located in the heart of old


Jabalpur city. It is a relic of the pre-
British era when it was under the
Bonsels of Nagpur. Kamania is
derived from the word Kaman
meaning 'arch' or 'bow' which is
the lower part of the gate. The
clock that is to be found on the
top was added in the year 1939 to
commemorate the historic Tripuri
congress Session held nearby the
Tilwara ghat.

Kamania gate is a crowded place and has a bright


atmosphere. One can find an outstanding collection of
wedding apparels. There is also a wide variety of modern
and traditional collection of clothing and handicrafts. The
tiny street-stalls have some amazing dishes to offer, the
taste of which is unforgettable. One can also buy flooring,
carpet, blankets, and curtains here.
Rani Durgavati
Museum
•Established –
1964
•Devoted to –
“Gond” queen Rani Durgavati , who
sacrificed her life fighting for her
motherland.

museum is double storiyed and
eye catching bearing the principles
of museum. There are four
galleries, along with an auditorium
in the ground floor. The first floor
has four galleries. These are Shaiva
gallery, Vaishnava gallery, Jaina
Gallery, Index Gallery, Excavation
gallery, Inscription gallery, Coin
gallery, and Tribal art gallery. The
remaining artifacts have been
placed as reserved collection.

The building of Durgawati museum is double storiyed and eye


catching bearing the principles of museum. However, some of the
selected specimens from reserve collection of lesser important are
displayed in open garden of the museum. There are total 6163
antiquities in the museum.
