Forms of Poetry

Reminders

We are about to start the

synchronous session. Sit back,
relax and let us put ourselves in the
presence of the Lord.
Prayer before Study
Lord, true source of light and wisdom, give us a
keen sense of understanding, a retentive memory
and the capacity to grasp things correctly.

Grant us the grace to be accurate in our

expositions and the skill to express ourselves with

Be with us at the start of our study. Guide its

progress and bring it to completion. Grant this
through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Definitions of Poetry
1.From Percy Bysshe Shelley’s essay,

happiest moments of the happiest and
best minds.
1.2. Poetry, in a general sense, may be
defined to be ‘the expression of the
Discussion
imagination’: and poetry is connate with the
origin of man.
1.3. Poetry is a mirror which makes beautiful
that which is distorted.
1.4. Poetry is a sword of lightning, ever
unsheathed, which consumes the scabbard
that would contain it.
1.5. All high poetry is infinite; it is as the first
acorn, which contained all oaks potentially.
Discussion
2. Edgar Allan Poe
“I would define, in brief, the Poetry of words
as the Rhythmical Creation of Beauty. Its
sole arbiter is taste. With the intellect or with
the conscience, it has only collateral
relations. Unless incidentally, it has no
concern whatever either with duty or with
truth.”
Discussion
3. Matthew Arnold
“Poetry is at bottom a criticism of life; that
the greatness of a poet lies in his powerful
and beautiful application of ideas to life — to
the question: How to live.”
