• Data Presentation Element
is the last unit of a
measuring system.

• It receives processed signal

from data processing
element and presents the
data in a form readable by
humans.
Visual Display Unit
• Data presentation element consists of display devices and recorders

• Visual Display Unit displays text and images generated by processing element,
without producing a permanent record
Advantages and Disadvantages

• All elements of the system, except the display screen, are optional and can be used in any order
Types
• Display Unit can be Analog or Digital

• Analog units are further divided into:

 Quantitative- These provide information on a variable’s numerical value.
 Qualitative- They convey information about status or condition of variable
falling within limited number of predetermined ranges.
 Representational- These reproduce a scene to convey a visual impression.
• Based on the Format used, Digital Display Units can be classified into
planner and non planner

• Planner- entire read-out characters in same plane.

• These may be of illuminated segmental type, illuminated dot matrix type,
and rear projection type

• Non- Planner- characters displayed in different planes

• They include gaseous discharge tube like nixies and illuminated lucite
sheets
• Based on Pixel Technologies, Display Units can be classified into different families:

• Cathode Ray Tube - An electron gun circuit splits the signal into separate red, blue, and green
signals  through a ring of electromagnets

• Light Emitting Device- A display made of PN Junction devices which emit lights when current
passes through them

• Liquid Crystal Diodes - A display made of liquid crystals acts like an array of tiny shutters that
transmit or block light, creating thousands of tiny dots of red, blue and green combined form a
color image.
Performance Parameters

 Resolution is the maximum under of horizontal and vertical dots (pixels) that
can be displayed without overlap on a monitor screen. It indicates how densely
the pixels are packed. Greater the number of pixels, better the resolution and
sharper the image.

 Refresh rate is (in CRTs) the number of times in a second that the display is
illuminated or the number of times the image can be changed per second,
expressed in hertz (Hz).

 Response time is the time it takes to display an image after receiving it.
