Physical Activity

Assessment
Performance
Correct assessment of physical activity is important as it
helps in determining the health benefits of physical activity
engagement.
Physical Activity (PA) - is a behavior that
involves bodily movements resulting in energy
expenditure. When assessing PA, the types of
behaviors performed during a period of time.

The role of Physical Activity Assessment is to

enhance individual promotion of physical
activity to facilitate home and community
support for physical education.
There are measurement tools to objectively gauge whether the
students understood the lesson or attained the expected learning outcomes. The
same holds true for physical activity involvement. Whether you are involved in
a sport, a hobby, or a physical activity, it is  prudent to incorporate metrics
to determine whether progress has taken place.
Physical activity is often measured using the
following:
• Questionnaire (survey) - including questionnaires, diaries, logs, and
recalls.
A questionnaire is the term used to describe the set of questions you're
asking an individual. A survey is the process of collecting, analyzing and
interpreting data from many individuals. A survey goes much deeper
than a questionnaire and often involves more than one form of data
collection.
Self-report tools or instruments are the most widely used tools to
assess physical activity including self- or interview-administered
questionnaires, recall, and activity diaries. A self-report is the most
economy friendly and easiest way to gather data on physical activity from a
huge number of people in a short time.
 Objective measures - including motion sensors, accelerometers,
and pedometers, heart rate (HR) monitoring, direct observation,
and doubly labeled water (DLW) method.

Objective measurement is something that is measured consistently.

For example, measuring how well someone can perform a set number
of tasks in a controlled environment. There are no other factors that
can alter the data gathered with this measurement. This will give you
more reliable and consistent data.

Objective measures of physical activity are very reliable and valid,

and based on systematic processing of data. However, objective
measurements are often expensive because of the tools needed, and
are very time consuming to process.
