Decisional Role

of a
Health Manager

Definition
 The decisional roles entail
making decisions or choices.

 These are the managerial roles


that revolve around making
choices.

 Its function approach is planning


and organizing.
According to Mintzberg, decisional role is
one of the most important and crucial part of
the managerial activity because making
decisions is the crux of completing the
objective of the organization. Decisions
taken over at different situations contribute
to the overall completion of the work. He
identified four roles which are based on
several forms of decisions.

03 Allocator 04 Negotiator
Entrepreneur
 Managers make decisions about changing what is
happening in an organization.
 They may have to initiate change and take an
active part in deciding exactly what is done -- they
are proactive -- to keep pace with the changing
situations and for improvement.
 Searches the organization and its environment and
initiates improvement projects to bring about
change.
 Supervises design of certain projects as well.
Entrepreneur
 The nurse administrator is also involved
in the development and the
implementation of the change strategy.

 Ex. Strategy and review sessions


involving initiation or design of
improvement projects.
Entrepreneur Role Key Responsibilities:

Be prepared to take initiative as part of


your managerial duties.

Initiate projects and address concerns


with effective problem-solving skills.

activities will help you connect with
your team.
Disturbance Handler
 Requires managers to make decisions on unpredictable and high-
pressure disturbing events which are beyond their control. For
instance, managers must resolve conflicts not only between his
department and other departments, but also among subordinates.

 Ensures that everything runs smoothly.

 In this role the nurse manager must handle the utility services
and disaster conditions and strikes.

 Managers react to situations that are unexpected such as mass


absenteeism, resignation of subordinates, or losing of customers.

 Ex. Strategy and review sessions involving disturbances and


crises.
Disturbance Handler Role Key Responsibilities:

Resolving conflicts with mentoring


sessions
Identifying areas for improvement
Addressing gaps in teamwork
Resource Allocator
 This role of a manager is central to much organizational
analysis.
 Concerned with fund allocation, cutting costs, and
distributing resources across the organization. You have to
apportion available resources such as funding, human
resources, and materials where needed.
 The manager is actually scheduling time, programming
work and authorizing actions.
 Ex. Scheduling; request for authorization; budgeting and
programming of subordinates work.
Resource Allocator Role Key Responsibilities:
Allocates the organization’s resources

Makes or approves of all significant


organizational decisions

Developing and monitoring the budget

Predicting resource needs

Forecasting future resource problems


Negotiator  This role is important as a manager has to negotiate
with others and in the process be able to make
decisions about the commitment of organizational
resources.

 A successful negotiation leads to a win-win outcome.

 A manager has to participate in negotiations with team


members and other stakeholders to reach a favorable
outcome for both parties. 

 This role distinguishes you from other managers


because you have to consider your team’s best
interests.

 Ex. Contract negotiation


Negotiator Role
Key Responsibility:

Represents the organization at


major negotiations.
Decisional Role of a Health Manager

Sound decision-making skills are essential, especially for managers and team
leaders. From leading critical meetings to overseeing team responsibilities, being
an effective manager means analyzing complex business problems and
implementing a sound plan moving forward.

approaches with relative
strengths and weakness; each
one is necessary for managers to
accomplish goals more
effectively.
Additional thoughts…

A manager’s job is never static; it is


always dynamic. At any given time, a
manager may carry out some
combination of these roles to varying
degrees, from none of the time to 100
percent of the time. Throughout an
individual’s working life, a person may
hold various management positions that
call upon different roles.
