At the end of the session the students must be

able to:
1. represent real-life situations using functions,
including piece-wise functions M11GM-Ia-1;
Let’s recall

What is relation?

What is function?

Is a function a relation?
Suppose there is a vending machine, with five
buttons labeled 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Scenario 1:
Pressing Button 1 will dispense a bottled water.
Pressing 2, will give you a milk drink while
pressing 3 will give you a coffee drink. If 4 is
pressed, it hands out fruit drink. Then pressing
5, gives a soda.

Scenario 2: Same vending machine, same

buttons, same five products dispensed.
However, when you press button 3, you
sometimes get a coffee drink and sometimes
get a soda. Otherwise, everything is the same
as in Scenario 1.

Is a function a relation?
Key Concepts
• Relations are rules that relate two values, one from a
set of inputs and the second from the set of outputs.

• Functions are rules that relate only one value from

the set of outputs to a value from the set of inputs.

• The domain of a relation is the set of all possible

values that the variable x can take
Lesson 1

Functions in Real World

• Circumference of a circle is a function of
diameter.

•Arm length is a function of height.

On average and over a

large age range the
human body has an
arm span that is
roughly equal to its
height and a femur
bone roughly a quarter
of its height.
Shadows - The length of a shadow is a function
of its height and the time of day.

Key Terms:
Relation – a correspondence
between the domain and the
range.
Function – is a relation such that
to each element of the domain,
there is exactly one element of
range assigned.

We write f(x) to denote a

function whose input is x.

Asynchronous Task 1:

Cite a real-world situation related to the

pandemic that can be represented by a function
then write a mathematical equation or a function
rule to represent the condition.
