STEAM POWER
PLANT
• A plant designed to convert the heat from the combustion of a fuel into
mechanical energy by means of steam

• Operates on a Rankine cycle

RANKINE CYCLE

A. Heat Added in the Boiler, QA

1 QA = h1 - h4 , kJ/kg
4 1 QA = m(h1 - h4), kW
Where: m = mass of steam flow, kg/s

2 4 B. Turbine Work, Wt
Wt = h1 - h2 , kJ/kg

Consider a steam power plant operating on a Rankine cycle. Steam enters the turbine
at 15 MPa and 600oC and is condensed in the condenser at a pressure of 10 kPa.
Determine the thermal efficiency of the cycle.

h1 = 3582.3 kJ/kg
s1 = 6.776 kJ/kg-K
s2 = s1 = sf2 + xsfg2
1 h2 = hf2 +x2 hfg2
4 1 sf2 = 0.6493 kJ/kg-K
sfg2 = 7.5009 kJ/kg-K
x2 = 0.8167953
2 4 hf2 = 191.83 kJ/kg
hfg2 = 2392.8 kJ/kg
3 2 h2 = 2146.26 kJ/kg
3
h3 = hf2 = 191.83 kJ/kg
h4 = v3(P4 – P3) + h3
v3 = vf at 10kPa = 0.0010102 m3/kg
h4 = 206.97 kJ/kg
e = 0.420967 = 42.0967%
A steam power plant operates on the simple Rankine cycle. Steam enters the turbine
at 4 Mpa, 500oC and is condensed in the condenser at a temperature of 40oC. If the
mass flow rate is 10 kg/s, determine (a) the thermal efficiency of the cycle, and (b) the
net power output in MW.
