Coconut in the Philippines
In the Philippines the Coconut tree is called the “Tree of Life’’, because of the
endless products derived from its various parts. They say if you’re stranded in a
desert island all you have to do is find a coconut tree and you will survive. In
fact during the Typhoon Haiyan -known locally as Yolanda- in 2013, affected
families survived on coconuts alone for days!
From leaves to roots, almost all parts of the coconut tree can be used — food,
shelter, fuel, decors, building house and even medicine. Here are some of its
uses and its benefits:
Coconut meat is a good source of protein and an effective natural laxative. It is
also a source of other products such as coco flour, desiccated coconut, coco
milk, coco chips, candies, latik, copra, and animal feeds. Also used as a main
ingredient for salad and other sweet delicacies.

Coconut water is used mostly for re-hydration and kidney cleansing.
Other than that, there are still ongoing researches regarding the use
of coconut water.
Coconut trunks can be used for building and construction purposes.
From the coconut trunk, handy and durable wood is obtained to
make various pieces of furniture and novelty items. Paper pulp can
also be extracted from the trunk.
Coconut shell, a part of Coconut fruit, can be used for the production
of handicrafts items, as charcoal for cooking, and many more.

Literature of the Study
The coconut industry is one of the cornerstones of Philippine Agriculture, accounting
for 3.6 million hectares of the country's 14 million hectares of farmland. After
Indonesia, the Philippines is the world's second-largest producer of coconut products
(Martha Jean Sanchez of Statista-2018). It had a production value of about 72 billion
Philippine pesos in the Philippines. It is a major agricultural export, contributing 3.6
percent of our nation's gross value added (GVA) in agricultural production, alongside
other major agricultural exports such as banana, corn, and rice (PSA 2019, Lapina and
Andal 2017). With this research, it's no surprise that coconut milk is often used as a
food ingredient in almost every Filipino family or restaurant; after all, coconut milk
adds creaminess to most Filipino dishes.

The conventional method of extracting coconut milk has a number of drawbacks,
including time consumption, tiring, and unsanitary results. In view of the above issues,
a milk extraction machine should be introduced to increase the quality and quantity of
coconut milk production. The high cost of mechanical coconut extractors makes small
industries to use the usual manual means (Claudio and Emong, 2007). To make it
simpler, the researchers created a design that combines a coconut cutter, grater, and
coconut milking. The proposed design is consists of three major operations, namely:
Cutting of the coconut/ breaking the coconut into two parts. Second, grating of the
coconut and removing the edible part (white part inside) called copra. Lastly, the
milking of the grated part of the coconut to get the coconut milk (gata).

coconut. The grating method has a number of issues, including being
time consuming and causing manual fatigue. It is a critical procedure
for restaurants, canteens, and domestic purposes. The ultimate goal is
to create a system that can quickly and safely conduct multipurpose
grating operations.

Machine” November 2015: this project is mainly designed to cut and
punch the coconut by using the compressor. This necessitates the
development of a punch-cum-splitter for punching and splitting the
tender coconut. The present work focuses on the development of a
manually operated coconut punch-cum-splitter for extracting coconut
water and coconut meat.

various fruits can be cut out on these machines.

SYNTHESIS AND JUSTIFICATION
While there are already existing extraction, cutting, grating machines
today
the purpose of this study is to optimize a multifunctional all in one
machine,
that can cut the coconut in a much safer way. Eliminate the use of manual
extraction with bare hands by replacing it with motorized hydraulic action
to
achieve a sanitary work. Use a grater machine that needs less man power
and a much safer way.

WHY IS OUR RESEARCH NEEDED?
Because, there is need to improve the method of milk
extraction by using machine to extract milk from coconut to
be able to achieve a quality product. To lessen the number

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE
STUDY
This study primarily focuses on coconut producers especially in
public places to produce consumers a more safety and a reliable
product that workers use the machine.
This study limits only on small scale coconut producers such as
public places because company coconut producers already have a
machine better than our study. As for the small-scale coconut
producers mostly cannot buy machines because of the price therefore
this research’s aim is to benefit all small-scale coconut producers to
give a much easier way of cutting, grating and milk extracting
process.

ASSUMPTIONS
With this study we can help the consumers and the workers by:
1. Making a much more safer machine to work.
2. Less work load for the workers.
3. More convenient machine and less time to prepare
4. Less time of waiting for a fresh grated coconut and coconut milk products.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The main objectives of this research study, aims to design and
fabricate a coconut cutter, grater and milk extractor for small-scale
coconut producers.
Specifically, the study will address the following:
1. Compare the performance of the multi-functional coconut
machine in terms of time and cost.
2. Establish a design that meet market standards.
3. Evaluate the process to ensure proper sanitation and
prevent contamination.
4. Evaluate the extractor in terms of compressive power.
5. Calculate the return on investment to show the possible amount that can be gained within 6 months.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This research study provides accuracy to cut, grate and milk extract and
consistency of the machine because of less work providing the workers a much
easier way to do. This research will benefit the workers and consumers:
Workers – their benefit is that their effort, time and energy to cut, grate and milk
extract the coconut will be significantly less times consuming compared to the
manual work and can also provide safety of the workers and to not be able to
contaminate the milk.
Consumers – their benefit is that when they order in terms of public they will
not have to wait long because of the machine, and can also provide the safety of
contamination of the milk that the consumers will order.
The goal of this research is to lessen the manual work of the workers and
preventing accidents and contaminating the milk with regards to work.
