Definition of Gastritis
Definition of Gastritis
● Gastritis is a condition when the lining of the stomach becomes irritated, inflamed or eroded. In the lining of
the stomach there are glands whose function is to produce stomach acid and digestive enzymes. The lining
of the stomach is protected by thick mucus so there is no irritation to the lining. When the mucus is gone,
irritation can occur in the stomach.
● Gastritis is divided into acute and chronic. In acute gastritis conditions, irritation will appear suddenly.
Generally, severe heartburn will appear even if only temporarily as a symptom. In chronic gastritis, irritation in
the stomach takes place slowly but will occur in a relatively longer period of time. The pain caused by
chronic gastric irritation is not as severe as compared to acute gastritis but will last for a long time. This
irritation can change the structure of the lining of the stomach and increase the risk of developing cancer.

If a person is prone to gastritis symptoms, start trying to change the portion and meal schedule. Changing the
portion and meal schedule can be done by reducing the portion of the meal from the previous one. This is so that
the meal schedule becomes more frequent than usual. Oily, sour, or spicy foods should also be avoided. Alcohol
can also cause symptoms of gastritis, so consumption of alcoholic beverages should also be avoided. Stress
control must also be done in order to avoid this disease.
