Simple

Present
Tense
Definition
The simple present tense is a Verb tense with two main uses. We use the
simple present tense when an action is happening right now, or when it
happens regularly (or unceasingly, which is why it’s sometimes called
present indefinite). Depending on the person, the simple present tense is
formed by using the root form or by adding ‑s or ‑es to the end.

2
Formula
To form this tense sentence, the basic form of the verb or Verb is usually
used. Except for the third person pronoun, use Verb 1 + s/es. As shown in
The Table below.

3
The form of the verb spelling in the third person (She, He,
It), depends on the ending of the verb (verb).
Untuk kata kerja yang berakhiran -O, -CH, -SH, -X, atau -Z, tambahkan -
ES.
✗ go – goes/catch – catches/wash – washes/kiss – kisses

Untuk kata kerja (Verb) yang berakhiran konsonan + Y, hilangkan Y, dan

tambahkan -IES.
✗ carry – carries/study – studies

Sedangkan, untuk kata kerja yang berakhiran vokal + Y, cukup tambahkan -

S.
✗ play – plays/say – says/enjoy – enjoys

Example Word
To show recurring events that are happen right now at the moment.
✗ The train to Bekasi leaves every hour.
✗ Kevin sleeps seven hours every night during the week.

To Show Fact.
✗ A snake has no legs.
✗ Indonesia has thirty-four provinces, from Sabang to Merauke.

To Show A Habbit
✗ Dika gets up early at 5 o’clock every day.
✗ Budi takes a bath twice a day.

5
Simple Present Tense Affirmative
The Formula to form Affirmative is

S + Verb (1) / Verb dasar / to be (is, am, are) + O

EXAMPLE :

✗ Susi Pudjiastuti is the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

✗ She reads Harry Potter books every day.
✗ They watch new movies every Sunday.

6
Simple Present Tense Negative
To form negative simple present tense sentences, usually use the addition of don't or doesn’t
before the verb, except To Be and Modal, the formula is

S + Don’t / Doesn’t + Verb (1) + O

If the verb is in the form of To Be, then the formula becomes

S + (is, am, are) + not + O

EXAMPLE :
✗ Susi Pudjiastuti is not the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
✗ She doesn’t read Harry Potter books every day.
✗ They don’t watch new movies every Sunday.

Remember for the third form subject (she, he it), after the word don't or doesn't, the verb form is
not added s/es.

7
Simple Present Tense
Interrogative
To form interrogative sentences / question sentences, usually use the addition of do or does
in front of the sentence. The formula is

Do / Does + S + Verb 1 + O

Do is used when the subject is I, you, they, or we. However, the word does is used if the
subject is in the third person (She, He, It).

Example :
✗ Does she read a Harry Potter book?
✗ Do they watch a new movie every day?
✗ Do you play basketball every morning?

8
But If the verb is in the form of To Be or Modal, then do not use do or does.

Example :
✗ Is Susi Pudjiastuti the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries?
✗ Are you new staff of Wall Street English?
✗ Are they football fans of Persija Jakarta?
