JOINTS

Presented by – Arihant Pandey

WHAT ARE A joint is a part of
the body where two

JOINTS?
bones meet to allow
movement.
Types of joints

Based
on Fibrous joints
structure
, there Cartilaginous joints
are 3
types of
joints:- Synovial joints
Fibrous joints
◦ These joints do not allow
movement.
◦ This joint is shown by flat
skull bones which fuse end
to end with the help of
dense fibrous connective
tissues.
Cartilaginous joints

◦ In such a joint bones are joined with the help of

cartilages.
◦ The joint between adjacent vertebrae in the vertebral
column is such a joint.
◦ It permits limited movements.
Synovial joints
◦It is characterized by the presence of a fluid
filled synovial cavity.
◦It allows considerable movement.
◦There are 4 types of synovial joints

are Hinge joint
four Pivot joint
types
Gliding joint
of
joints:- Saddle joint
Ball and socket
joint
◦Ball-and-socket joint, also called spheroidal joint,
in vertebrate anatomy.
◦A joint in which the rounded surface of a bone
moves within a depression on another bone,
allowing greater freedom of movement than any
other kind of joint.
◦It is most highly developed in the
large shoulder and hip joints of mammals,
including humans, in which it provides swing for
the arms and legs in various directions and spin of
those limbs upon the more stationary bones.
Hinge joint
◦Hinge joints are a type of joint that
functions much like the hinge on a door,
allowing bones to move in one direction
back and forth with limited motion along
other planes
◦It can be found in fingers, toes, elbows,
knees, and ankles
Pivot Joint
◦Pivot joint is a synovial joint in which the ends of
two bones connect. In this joint, a cylinder-shaped
bone rotates inside another ligament that forms a
ring around the joint.
◦The joint between the atlas and the axis which is
right under the skull, allows the turning of the head
from side to side
Gliding joint
◦Plane joint, also called gliding joint or
arthrodial joint is a type of structure in the
body formed between two bones in which the
articular, or free, surfaces of the bones are flat
or nearly flat, enabling the bones to slide over
each other.
Saddle joint
◦Saddle joints are a type of synovial joint that allow
articulation by reciprocal reception. Both bones
have concave-convex articular surfaces which
interlock like two saddles opposed to one another.
