Climate change
•The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) defines
climate change as “a change in climate which is attributed directly or indirectly to
human activity that alters the composition of the global atmosphere and which is in
addition to natural climate variability observed over comparable periods of time”
(UNFCCC, 1992).
•Signatories: 165
•Signed: 20 June 1992 – 19 June 1993
•Location: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, New York, United States
•Effective: 21 March 1994
Aims and Objectives
• To understand how climate change is likely to impact upon health and
health inequalities in Uttarakhand.
• To make recommendations for local public health, govt. and environment
organization on how to minimize the impact of climate change on health
and take action at a local level.
Impact and Adaptation
• Climatic change has played an important role in the Uttarakhand.
• Indigenous people of higher Himalaya face new challenges for survival
because of climate change. More frequent and intense drought, storms, heat
waves, rising sea levels, melting glaciers and warming oceans can directly
harm them and destroy the places they live.
• The impact of current climate change is largely human activity.
• Climate change adaptation refers to actions that reduce the negative impact of
climate change, while taking advantage of potential new opportunities.
Material and Methods
• The reliable climate data are available from locations of Chakarata
Dehradun that indicate the changes in climatic parameters.

Hill station Chakarata

Study Area
• The area selected for this study is located in Uttarakhand Himalayas
which form part of central Himalaya region of India.
• The area comprising of Chakarata blocks of Dehradun district is located in
north-western hilly tract of the district.
• It covers an area of about 1000 sq. kms.
Result
• For temperature
• 1987-1995 – The average maximum temperature : It shows mix trend in
more or less and constant temperature.
• 1996-2005- The average minimum temperature : Except may and august
has been lower during the second period.
• Source: Forest Working Plans for different periods, Department of Forest,
Government of Uttarakhand.
Conclusion
• The information gathered during the course of this study indicates the
change in climate characteristics, their impact on livelihood activities of
local communities and the adaptation measures adopted. The climate data
from weather stations from the study area show marginal increase in
maximum temperature and decrease in minimum temperature.
