ADMINISTERING

OXYGEN
PURPOSES
Face mask
To provide moderate oxygen support and a higher
concentration of oxygen and humidity.
PROCEDURE
Gather materials that are needed:
 Oxygen supply with a flow meter and adapter
 Humidifier with distilled water or tap water according to
agency protocol
 Oxygen delivery system (face mask)
Rationale: This saves time, energy, and effort.
PROCEDURE
Check doctors order including administering device
and the liter flow. Rationale: This promotes accurate
and error free administration.
Doctor’s order: 2-6 L/min
PROCEDURE
Introduce self and identify client properly. Explain what
you are going to do, why it is necessary and how he/ she
can cooperate. Discuss effects of the oxygen therapy that
will be used in planning further care or treatments.
Rationale: Introducing yourself will help establish rapport
with the patient. Verifying the client’s identity ensures
correct patient and improve patient safety. Discussing
the procedure will gain cooperation from the client.
Hi Julie, I am nurse Armie. I will be administering oxygen
to maintain oxygen saturation at normal levels.
PROCEDURE
Perform hand hygiene and observe other appropriate
infection control procedures. Rationale: To prevent
possible spread of infection.
PROCEDURE
Provide for client’s privacy. Rationale: The
client will be more comfortable during the
procedure.
PROCEDURE
Set up the oxygen equipment and the humidifier.
 Attach the flow meter to the wall outlet or tank
 Attach the humidifier bottle to the base of flow meter
 Attach the prescribed oxygen tubing and delivery device to the
humidifier
Rationale: This serves as a preparation for the
oxygen therapy.
PROCEDURE
Turn on the oxygen at the prescribed rate and
ensure proper functioning. Rationale: This
ensures accurate handling and precise
administration of oxygen to the right patient.
 Check if the oxygen is flowing freely through the
tubing. Make sure there are no kinks.
 Set the oxygen at the flow rate ordered which is 2-6
L/min.
PROCEDURE
Apply the appropriate oxygen delivery system.
 ✓ Guide the mask toward the clients face and apply it from the nose
downward.
 ✓Fit the mask to the contours of the clients face.
 ✓Secure the elastic band around the clients head so that the mask is
comfortable but snug.
 ✓Pad the band behind the ears and over bony prominences.
Rationale: To maintain targeted oxygen saturation
levels through the provision of supplemental oxygen
in a safe and effective way tolerated by the client.
PROCEDURE
 Assess the clients regularly.
 Assess the client’s vital signs, level of anxiety, color, and ease
respirations and provide support while the client adjusts to the
device.
 Assess the client in 15-30 minutes, depending on the client’s
condition and regularly thereafter.
 Assess the client regularly for clinical sign of hypoxia, tachycardia,
confusion, dyspnea, restlessness, and cyanosis.
 Face mask
 ✓ Inspect the facial skin frequently for dampness, chaffing. Kept dry.
 Rationale: Assessment must be carried out to ensure that the
treatment is safe and effective.
PROCEDURE
Inspect the equipment in a regular basis.
Rationale: This is a precaution for the client’s
safety.
 Check the liter flow and level of water in the
humidifier.
 Maintain the level of water in the humidifier.
PROCEDURE
 Document findings in the clients record using forms or
checklist supplemented by narrative notes when appropriate.
Rationale: Proper documentation is a proof of work done and
observed. It is imperative for nurses to document to have a
clear understanding of the nursing care necessary to promote
patients’ health and well-being
