Some problems with CONCERT system
• Design required manual interventions during program terminations and link failures.
• Some issues regarding current day reservation system and reservation for immediate stations.
• The coaching refund system was not integrated with the PRS .
• Some problems both in physical access and logical access control .
•Later on these problems were dealt with the development and upgradation of the software and the system.
Passenger Reservation Information Systems
At Indian Railways
• The Indian Railways is the 4th largest railway network in the world by size with a route length of
67,956km.
• Indian Railways approximately carries 8 billion passengers and 1.2 billion tonnes of freight in a year.
• 60% of the passengers are from sub-urban, 13% are commuters travelling between cities amd 27% are
long distance travellers.
• Passenger Reservation System (PRS) allows a passenger anywhere to book train tickets from any station
to any station.
• PRS handles reservations, changes, cancellations and refunds, reserving over 1.6 million seats and
berths daily.
The main aim was to improve the business practices which will be supported by IT, reduce the cycle
time and make prompt service delivery.
The primary customer focused IT applications to provide relevant information in the railways are:
• Passenger Reservation System (PRS)
• Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS)
• National Train Enquiry System (NTES)
• Freight operating information system (FOIS)
• Journey planning
• Passenger interfaces

• The financial position of Indian Railways has been slowly but steadily
improving.
• The advantages provided by reengineering has led to high growth and
profits. It enables customers to book tickets electronically.
• It helps the customers to see the train movement and position on the
internet
INPUT, OUTPUT AND REPORT IN
PASSENGER RESERVATION SYSTEM
(PRS)
The passenger fills either the reservation or cancellation form as input.
The passenger gets the ticket as output and the report is sent to the administration.
The report includes train number, train name, source, destination, seat number, compartment.
