In 1986, the Ministry of Railways ,established the center for
Railway Information Systems (CRIS) as an umbrella for all
computer activities on Indian Railways.

CENTRE FOR CRIS is responsible for designing, developing and implementing. all
major computer systems for the railways.
RAILWAY
INFORMATION In 2000, CRIS designed and implemented Indian Railways own
Web site, which receives a staggering 1.2 million hits per day. The
SYSTEMS site is hosted by CRIS and runs on the OpenVMS Alpha Server
platform

Responsible for developing CONCERT.

CONCERT - COUNTRY-WIDE NETWORK FOR COMPUTERIZED ENHANCED
RESERVATION AND TICKETING
• Developed by CRIS(Centre for Railway Information Systems), Chanakya Puri, New Delhi.
• The PRS is based on online transaction processing. It was given the name Integrated Multi- train
Passenger Reservation System (IMPRESS) which later developed into single image system called
Countrywide Network Of Computerized Enhanced Reservation (CONCERT).
• A total networking solution to Indian Railways Passenger Reservation System.
• Indian Railways computerized PRS currently operates from five regional centres located at Delhi,
Bombay, Calcutta, Madras and Secunderabad.
• CRIS was assigned the task of development and implementation of the new software incorporating
networking for Indian Railways thereby interconnecting the five PRS centres.
• The new On-line Passenger Reservation System CONCERT - developed using client-server model for
distributed computing is a total solution to the networking of the PRSs.
• The software has been successfully implemented at all of the five PRS' site viz. Secunderabad in Sept.
1994, and New Delhi in Sept. 1996,Calcutta 14th June 1998 and recently at Mumbai on 11th Jan 1999,
and at Chennai on 12th April 1999 thus the complete network become operational on 18th April 1999,
and has been working satisfactorily since then.

•Supervisory operations
•Enquiries and chart preparation
•Verification of data

Offline functions
•Generate account reports(gross earnings, Train wise delay status report etc)
•Station balance sheets
•Traffic forecasting
•Database maintenance

Benefits
•This system has changed the face of passenger reservation system for Indian Railways.
•Route-based reservation system which facilitates its user tickets from any station to any station.
•Multiple laps of reservations can be handled from single terminal.
•Advance reservation is made possible like changes in train profiles train carriage addition route structure etc.
•Data reports provide online aggregation of EIS figures such as revenue seat/berth utilization etc.
•Stores automatic database recovery against all kinds of hardware and software failures.
Some problems with CONCERT system
• Design required manual interventions during program terminations and link failures.
• Some issues regarding current day reservation system and reservation for immediate stations.
• The coaching refund system was not integrated with the PRS .
• Some problems both in physical access and logical access control .
•Later on these problems were dealt with the development and upgradation of the software and the system.
Passenger Reservation Information Systems
At Indian Railways
• The Indian Railways is the 4th largest railway network in the world by size with a route length of
67,956km.
• Indian Railways approximately carries 8 billion passengers and 1.2 billion tonnes of freight in a year.
• 60% of the passengers are from sub-urban, 13% are commuters travelling between cities amd 27% are
long distance travellers.
• Passenger Reservation System (PRS) allows a passenger anywhere to book train tickets from any station
to any station.
• PRS handles reservations, changes, cancellations and refunds, reserving over 1.6 million seats and
berths daily.

• Indian Railways basically implemented PRS to:

a) Facilitate customer's convenience for buying railway tickets.
b) Improve the efficiency of Railways by reducing the burden on the staff present at the ticket counter.
BUILDING INFORMATION SYSTEMS INFRASTRUCTURE
FOR PASSENGER RESERVATION SYSTEM (PRS)

The main aim was to improve the business practices which will be supported by IT, reduce the cycle
time and make prompt service delivery.
The primary customer focused IT applications to provide relevant information in the railways are:
• Passenger Reservation System (PRS)
• Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS)
• National Train Enquiry System (NTES)
• Freight operating information system (FOIS)
• Journey planning
• Passenger interfaces
PASSENGER RESERVATION SYSTEM
(PRS)

● Introduced in the year 1986 , at 4 major metro city

● Today it has PRS has 1200 locations with more than 4000 terminals covering
around 3000 trains , and around 15 lakhs transaction in a day
● Presently it has its main servers located a 5 locations in india
● Reservation, cancellation, PNR enquiry, IVRS (interactive voice response system)
● Other ticket ATMs, SMS enquiry service all use PRS at the back end all linked
with optical fiber
● PRS is the primary database and holds all the data of passengers and trains
which is accessed by different system to function like the IRCTC, NTES, Train
running and arrival information.

Railways has, over the past twenty years, responded to the passengers need of
easier train journeys by providing new and innovative methods.

Starting with the online PRS, management information system (MIS) has played
a major role in this process. Undoubtedly, the most useful application on the
ROLE OF railway system has been the PRS.

INFORMATION
SYSTEM / This system allows reservation of seats between any pair of stations to be made
from any terminal on the system.
INFORMATION
TECHNOLOGY PRS, at present provides improved service to customers and enables customers
IN PRS to book tickets electronically, thus saving their valuable time and effort.

Indian Railways has developed a wide array of. Internet, intranet, and. extranet
applications that link all elements of its network. It has reengineered its business
processes to simplify the transportation of people and has developed a complex
Web of information systems to support the simplified processes
CHANGES IN PRS DUE TO MIS
After implementing IT applications :-
• the overall business performance has improved considerably.
• The financial position of Indian Railways has been slowly but steadily
improving.
• The advantages provided by reengineering has led to high growth and
profits. It enables customers to book tickets electronically.
• It helps the customers to see the train movement and position on the
internet
INPUT, OUTPUT AND REPORT IN
PASSENGER RESERVATION SYSTEM
(PRS)
The passenger fills either the reservation or cancellation form as input.

The passenger gets the ticket as output and the report is sent to the administration.

The input can be name, gender, age, address, phone number.

The Output can be waiting, confirmed or cancelled ticket.

The report includes train number, train name, source, destination, seat number, compartment.
PVR can be used as a strategic application by

segment for Railways.
in Current • Indian railways has a large network-

management.
• IR has links with adjacent countries.
• With an improved IT sector:
• IR uses PRS, which covers 97% of
reservations
• IR uses FOIS and ICMS
