Plate Boundaries

Science 10

Mr. Patrick C. Andales

Opening Prayer
Dear Lord and Father of all,
thank you for today.
Thank you for ways in which you
provide for us all.
For your protection and love we
thank You.
Help us to focus our hearts and
minds now what we are about to
learn.
Inspire us by your holy spirit as we
listen and write.
Guide us by your eternal light as we
discover more about the world
around us.
We ask all this in the name of
Jesus .Amen.
Think-Pair-Share
What natural phenomenon are being presented in the video?

What causes these phenomenon to occur?

Standards
CONTENT
The learners demonstrate an understanding of: the relationship among the
locations of volcanoes, earthquake epicenters, and mountain ranges

PERFORMANCE
The learners shall be able to:
1. demonstrate ways to ensure disaster preparedness during earthquakes,
tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions

2. suggest ways by which he/she can contribute to government efforts in

reducing damage due to earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions
LEARNING COMPETENCIES
1. describe the different types of plate boundaries S10ES –Iaj-36.2

2. explain the different processes that occur along the plate boundaries S10ES –Iaj-36.3

3.  strive to work hard in achieving goals in life

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Knowledge- Determine the characteristics of the three plate boundaries

Skills - Use models in simulating how plates move

Abilities - Explain the different movements that will take place in plate boundaries.

The theory of plate tectonics speaks on the constant movement of the
Earth’s lithosphere brought about by convection currents.

It has been noted that tectonic plates vary from size depending on its
location.

Eurasian plate, for example, covers a larger scope that includes all Europe
and Asia.

Meanwhile, other plates are small which includes the part of Atlantic that
surrounds the Caribbean islands and a small part of
Central America.

All these plates touch each other at plate boundaries.

Transform Boundaries
Transform boundaries are places where the plates slide past each other.
Commonly, this type of boundary is known as fault lines. When plates
tend to grind, the force is piled up along the fault which may result to
the occurrence of earthquake.
Divergent Boundaries
Divergent boundaries usually happen on the ocean floor and are sometimes
called as mid-oceanic ridges.
In this type of plate boundary, the plates are moving away from each other
leading to the formation of rift valleys and oceanic ridges.
During this time, the magma rises and begins to fill up the gap and eventually
creates a new sea floor.
Convergent Boundaries
Convergent boundaries occur when plates move toward each other.
In this situation, one plate tends to subduct over the other plate which
may reach the ocean of magma and is likely to melt over time.
The above plate is likely pushed forming mountains and mountain
ranges. When one plate moves under another plate, this process is
known as subduction.
Three types of Convergent Boundaries
1. Convergent boundary between continental and oceanic crust leads to
subduction, volcanoes and trenches.

2. Convergent boundary between two oceanic crust, resulting to subduction,

has formed deeper trenches like the Marianas trench.

3. Convergent boundary between two continental crust forms mountains like

the Appalachian and Himalayas mountain ranges.
Let’s Analyze It

What is likely to happen during the transform boundary?

What did you notice when you move the crackers away from each other?

What have you noticed when you move the crackers towards each other?

Elaborate the
process that occur
in each type of
boundary.
Let’s Do It
Make a chart that lists the different types of plate boundaries and the
description of their movements. Kindly show the diagram of plate movement.

Assignment

Answer the following questions in a one whole sheet of paper:

What is the difference between a convergent and divergent boundary?

How is transform boundary different from a convergent and divergent

boundary?

Describe what happens during subduction.

EsP Integration

As the earth moves, different formation takes place right?

Relating it to yourself, what possible transformation will happen
to you if you work hard and continue to move amidst difficulties,
amidst pandemic?
